Peggy King

Although Peggy King is a full-time energy analyst by day, her attention to detail carries over into something magical after-hours. In the basement of her house is a studio she has formatted to suit her passion, taking it over from her husband, Bob, a clockmaker. Now it is her haven for glassmaking. The Best of Missouri Hands juried artist — she is also a past president of the organization — has created and sold her glass artworks for several years at Bluestem Missouri Crafts, the Columbia Art League and Art in the Park along with exhibiting at shows in St. Louis. Most recently, she was given the opportunity to create for this year's installment of the Missouri Arts Awards, given by the Missouri Arts Council. Her work is often bright and colorful while still containing a kind of pleasing order in her mind, she said. "I'm very linear. I'm an analyst by day," she reiterated. "So when I look at something like this," pointing to a plate containing crazily colored squiggles that she had created as an experiment, it reminds her of a crazy-looking "ugly amoeba." Typically, she said, "I want things more linear, lined, straight, organized."

King has worked with several types of glass — her studio is abundant in rods and materials for beads, molds for plates and other dishware, cut glass for fusing work and gritty ground glass called "frit" for adding texture and color to already molten glass.

The current glass movement explosion in the United States traces its roots to the late 1950s, King said, when enterprising artists began to experiment with heating, forming and shaping. "Glass has always been the provenance of Italy, and they have always been very jealous of their methods," King explained. "So for years and years and years, they were the only ones who knew how to make glass."

So it was American hippies and their slightly earlier predecessors, King said, who had to start over from scratch and learn everything themselves. They built small furnaces and learned how to mix artistic glass instead of using machine-manufactured glass used at that time for cookware and bottles. Now, in the United States, methods and materials and instructions are shared freely. King is a direct beneficiary of those who experimented with glass over the past half-century because now it is a cinch to order the types of glass she wants to work with. When she receives dichroic glass in the mail, for instance, it already has different colors and patterns applied to it in a high-tech process using vacuum chambers and ion guns. I cannot imagine building the Alcan in the awful mud through Canada and Alaska. Or traveling the unpaved road like a lot of my older friends have told me. My daughter Gail lived on a homestead back on Boulder Point. 'Colonoscopies save lives and are nothing compared to cancer'

No matter what you've heard about how unpleasant colonoscopies are, Susan Brady hopes her story will convince you they're a whole lot better than the possible alternatives.

"Many people are afraid or embarrassed to get a colonoscopy," said Brady, 52, a product manager with a software company. "They buy into the hype about how terrible the prep is, how you have to drink this liquid that doesn't taste great and how you have to stay near a toilet. But colonoscopies save lives and they are nothing -- nothing -- compared to cancer, the treatments and their potential side effects."

Colorectal cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But the survival rate is improving, and experts credit screening, especially colonoscopy, which catches cancers early and even allows polyps to be found and removed before they become malignant.

Two years ago, Brady experienced periodic rectal bleeding over two months. At first, she thought it might be hemorrhoids.

But with a family history of colon cancer (an aunt and cousin both died of the disease), she decided to visit the doctor, who scheduled a colonoscopy. During the procedure, a thin, flexible lighted tube is inserted into the rectum and colon to check for polyps while the patient is sedated.

A 20-year study recently published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that colonoscopies cut the rate of deaths from colorectal cancers by 53 percent.

In Brady's case, a Stage IIA rectal cancer was found. It had penetrated the muscle layer of the rectum but had not yet pierced the rectum wall. "I was in shock," she said. "I worked out, ate right, felt good and had a colonoscopy just three years earlier." She believes her cancer was fast-growing, and that's why it wasn't seen on that first screening.

"It's so preventable," said Brady. "People need to educate themselves about the disease and its symptoms." Brady's diagnosis was followed by a series of barium enemas and endoscopic ultrasounds of the rectum, as well as radiation and chemotherapy administered over a period of six weeks.

After that came surgery to remove the remnants of the cancer. Show director, Phil Valentine, commented: " We are absolutely delighted with the way the show has gone. Marie Colvin's killing piles pressure on Assad as civilian death toll rises

The deaths of the veteran Sunday Times correspondent Marie Colvin and the French photographer Rémi Ochlik amid a rising toll of civilian victims in Syria have prompted renewed calls for an end to the regime of Bashar al-Assad.

Their deaths came on a day in which, according to activists, more than 80 people were killed in the besieged district of Baba Amr in Homs, which has been under daily attack by the Syrian army for three weeks.

The French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, called the journalists' deaths an assassination and said the Assad era had to end.

"That's enough now," he said. "This regime must go and there is no reason that Syrians don't have the right to live their lives and choose their destiny freely. If journalists were not there, the massacres would be a lot worse."

The foreign secretary, William Hague, said the deaths were "a terrible reminder of the suffering of the Syrian people – scores of whom are dying every day". He added: "Marie and Rémi died bringing us the truth about what is happening to the people of Homs. Governments around the world have the responsibility to act upon that truth – and to redouble our efforts to stop the Assad regime's despicable campaign of terror in Syria."

The Syrian ambassador to London was later summoned to the Foreign Office ,where officials told Dr Sami Khiyami the UK government was "horrified" by the violence in Homs.

Political director Sir Geoffrey Adams said he expected immediate arrangements to be put in place for Colvin's body to be repatriated, as well as for the medical treatment of British photographer Paul Conroy, who was also injured in the shelling.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "Sir Geoffrey stressed that the British government was horrified by the continuing unacceptable violence in Homs, which has been under attack for 19 days.

"He noted that today alone the world had witnessed the death of more than 60 civilians, including children, on the single street of al-Hakoura in the Baba Amr neighbourhood.

"Our clear demand was for the violence to stop immediately. The Syrian authorities must implement the undertakings they had given to the Arab League, halt all violence against civilians, and start an orderly political transition before a single further death took place."

David Cameron told the Commons Colvin was a "talented and respected foreign correspondent" and her death was "a desperately sad reminder of the risks journalists take to inform the world of what is happening and the dreadful events in Syria".

Colvin and Ochlik were killed after an artillery shell hit the house in which they were staying. Three other foreign reporters, as well as seven activists from Baba Amr, were wounded on Wednesday. One of the injured, freelance photographer Paul Conroy, was travelling with Colvin.

Edith Bouvier, a freelance journalist working for the French paper Le Figaro, suffered serious leg injuries in the attack. Activists warned that she was at risk of bleeding to death.

Jean-Pierre Perrin, senior foreign correspondent at the French daily Libération, said he had been with Colvin and other journalists at a makeshift press centre in Homs and had left with her several days ago after being warned that the army was preparing an offensive and that journalists could be targeted. Colvin waited, decided the offensive against the press centre had not happened and returned to Homs.

Perrin told Libération the press centre, which had a generator and a patchy internet connection, was the only means of telling the world what was happening.Information on useful yeasts and moulds, "If the press centre were destroyed, there would be no more information out of Homs."

He said the army recommended "killing any journalist that stepped on Syrian soil". In the deadliest time for the media since the uprising began, at least three citizen journalists have also been killed in recent days, in an apparent attempt by the regime to prevent news emerging from Homs. The three had played prominent roles in chronicling the army's assault on Homs.

One of them was video blogger Rami al-Sayed, known as Syria Pioneer, who had uploaded to the internet at least 200 videos of killing and destruction in his neighbourhood.

An activist for the campaigning group Avaaz who saw the attack said: "I left the house after it got struck and headed to a house across the street. Another witness said rockets continued to rain down on the area as the wounded tried to escape the bombed two-storey house. The critical fix, bulletin MS12-004, addresses two privately reported issues in Windows Media Player that could allow an intruder to carry out a remote code execution attack if a specially designed media file were to be downloaded and opened.

Media players represent easy targets for attackers, according to Marcus Carey, a security researcher at Rapid7.

"This [bulletin] should serve as a reminder that we should expect researchers and attackers to continue to exploit client applications such as media players and browsers," said Carey. "In fact, media players are the target of non-stop fuzzing: the process of throwing the kitchen sink at an application to find where it breaks."

Microsoft's first important item of the month, bulletin MS12-001, is noteworthy for being classified as a "Security Features Bypass." That vulnerability impact designation represents a first for a Microsoft bulletin. Many third-party security experts, including Joshua Talbot, a security intelligence manager at Symantec Security Response, believe that this important item should be put at the top of IT's "to-do" list.

"The vulnerability is due to an oversight that allows an attacker to run malware as soon as a user opens a Word or PowerPoint file. Another notable bulletin this month includes a fix for a Secure Socket Layer (SSL) 3.0 and Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.0. flaw that could be exploited with a toolkit called BEAST, which was demonstrated last September. Residents tell of deteriorating homes

The faint smell of sewage still hangs in the living room of the mobile home vacated last month by Tarina Caughlin and her family.

"You should have smelled it when it was hot out," Caughlin said.

It's frozen now, but wasn't when Caughlin, 30, lived there from October until early December. In 2009, the village of Weston faced similar complaints with the Green Acres mobile home park there. That case ended with an agreement between park owners and the village that yielded results. By the end of that year, violations had been fixed and there were fewer police visits to the park -- improvements officials attributed to real effort put forward to park owners.

That was the extent of a short conversation Fifrick had with Bouche in early December, Fifrick said. He hasn't heard from him since.

A phone number provided to the village of Kronenwetter and a number provided to the park's manager were disconnected when the Daily Herald called last week. An email sent to an address used by Bouche was returned with an error message. Park manager Amy Born said her last communication from Bouche was a brief email in December in which Bouche asked her whether there were violations at Bouche's mobile home park in Antigo, where the city also recently declared nine of his homes uninhabitable. Born also said she has not been paid since then.

Fifrick said he expects the village to move forward with revocation of Bouche's license.

Having had offers from a number of colleges and universities, Cleare decided to sign with the Terrapins simply because they are in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) where such schools such as Clemson, Wake Forest, Florida State, Boston College and Duke are all members.

"The ACC is a tough conference and if you can shine there, you can shine anywhere," Cleare stated. "I just don't want to play with the best, I want to play against the best so that I can enhance my skills."

Cleare, considered a late bloomer having started playing basketball during his teenage years, said he owe a lot of his success to his parents, Brian and , who made the sacrifice to send him to high school in Houston.

"We expect to continue to work hard and win a lot of games," said Cleare, who has made an impact at The Village School where he has been a towering dominating factor in the paint.

The scouting report has Cleare listed as a "big body post with off the charts upside. He has good hands, light feet and excellent touch around the basket.

"Cleare uses his strength to power the ball to the rim with drops steps on both side of the lane."

As he prepare for the next level, Cleare said he's been advised to work on his mid-range jump shot and defense because the coaching staff at Maryland are anticipating him coming in an making an impact right away.

"This past summer, I did a lot of one-on-one stuff with this private coach," Cleare pointed out. "He played in the NBA for a year and he coaches one of our AAU teams.

As far as the title, personal perspective is that nothing about this book really screams "advanced" in that everything showcased can be used by a competitor of any level.
