Will Kitsch, a sixth grader at Governor Mifflin Intermediate School, didn’t grow up on a farm, but when his preschool class visited one, he says he was the only one who wanted to go into the chicken coop to collect the eggs.

Will learned how to take care of them and eventually decided he wanted to join 4-H and begin showing his chickens. Unfortunately, he found out that his chickens were not show quality. After that, Will began hatching his own chicks and even raising a few that were destined for his family’s kitchen table. Christine said they had a lot of talks with Will and his siblings about raising chickens for meat. They knew from the start that those chickens were not to be named and that they would have a short life. Today Will has 30-40 chickens in his backyard (just a little over an acre) in Mohnton.

Every morning Will gets up before school to feed and water the chickens. Then after school he goes out and does it all again. Will has had Tiger since he was a chick and Tiger’s son, who Will hatched himself, also showed well this year.

To prepare Tiger and the 28 other chickens he took to the show, Will trimmed their toe nails, washed them, and put “stuff” on their combs and feathers to make them glossy. Will says that they needed to be very clean.

About a year ago, Will brought two ducks home for his nine-year-old brother, Gabriel, who has always loved ducks. One of them got away, so they bought ten eggs for Gabriel. Christine says that raising chickens and ducks has taught the boys responsibility, compassion, and care. A Heavenly Visit

The parents had little time to absorb that shocking declaration when their son went on to say that he saw Daddy praying and Mommy talking on the phone. Since he was unconscious on the operating table, how could he have known exactly what they were doing?

They had not shared that information with anyone. Colton went on to say that he had gone out of his body and was looking down on the table while the doctor worked on him. Sonja’s eyes got big and Todd kept saying to himself over and over, ‘Could this be real?’

The previous year had proved extremely trying for the family even before the near-tragedy. The couple played in a coed softball league and was in the season’s final game when Todd broke his leg in two places sliding into base.
His recovery time made working at his second job impossible. To augment his pastor’s salary he had a garage door installation business. With his huge cast he could not climb the necessary steps to complete the job. Then he developed painful kidney stones which required treatment. As if that weren’t enough, a lump in his chest was diagnosed as cancer and had to be removed. All these expenses soon went way beyond his and his wife’s combined income and they were in debt.

When Todd’s cast was off, Sonja urged him to go to a church meeting in Greeley, Colorado. While he was there, Colton came down with what the doctor said was a virus going around. He got better so Sonja joined Todd with the children. The boy got terribly sick and the doctor seemed unable to help him so they took him to the hospital in North Platte. The surgeon said his appendix had ruptured and did not give them much hope. They called their church family to pray for their son and nervously waited for the operation to be over. There were complications but Colton did recover.

Portal fan turns home office into Aperture Laboratories

To the left of the accent wall, he wanted to hang a Cave Johnson oil painting. Voiced by actor J.K. Simmons within Portal 2, Cave Johnson is the founder and CEO of Aperture Science. While Thinkgeek has a similar portrait for sale, the Portal fan wanted to create something more unique for the home office.

He hired an artist to create an oil painting of Cave Johnson from a photograph and mounted the finished version inside a 16”x20” wooden frame. At the bottom of the frame, he also fixed a brushed gold nameplate that says “Cave Johnson: Science isn’t about why, it’s about why not!” This portion of the project cost $105 plus shipping for the print.

Next to the main desk on the opposite side of the accent wall, he mounted a lighted Test Chamber sign identical to the one found within the Portal games. With a budget of less than $100 for this portion of the project, he started with a 16”x31” shadowbox frame which he painted gray. After acquiring a sheet of translucent white plexi-glass that was cut to the right size, he found the Test Chamber icons in vector format on the Web as well as the font used within Portal. After working up the project to scale in CorelDraw again, he sent off the layout to a friend with a vinyl cutter and eventually applied the sticky film to the front of the unit.

The final DIY addition to the the Portal-themed home office are two lemon grenades. Taking about an hour to create, he purchased two fake plastic lemons from a crafts store as well as two inert grenades that he found at a local army surplus store. After applying a coat of paint to the top of the grenades, he cut holes in each lemon and screwed in the grenade tops as well as adding a bit of adhesive caulking. Using the vinyl cutter again, he created a stencil of the Aperture Laboratories circular logo and airbrushed that onto the side of the lemon. The entire project cost approximately eight dollars per lemon grenade.

Other Portal-themed additions to the room include a Companion Cube cookie jar converted to a planter, a set of Portal bookends, a GLaDOS model and a “Don’t drink the water!” drink coaster. A full gallery of the project’s creation can be seen here.

Ioby Partners with Deutsche Bank to Fund Projects

CDCs, non-profit organizations commissioned to provide services or programs in a certain geographic location, are a particularly good way for ioby to deepen its focus on local solutions to environmental problems in communities. “Any New Yorker can post their project on ioby, but we have a special interest in supporting the ideas and initiatives of New Yorkers in neighborhoods that have a greater burden of environmental problems and fewer resources to address them,” says Erin Barnes, executive director and co-founder of ioby, in a press release about the partnership with Deutsche Bank.

“This partnership came about through conversations with Deutsche Bank about how our mass campaigns were working for us. Deutsche Bank has long been dedicated to working with CDCs. When I was saying to Sam Marks, the program officer we work with at Deutsche Bank, how match campaigns work with ioby, he immediately drew the conclusion that [we could work with] CDCs, since their target focus is the neighborhood level, and that would be a perfect opportunity for ioby to improve its reach,” Barnes, told Dowser.

The second pilot project will be a partnership between Living City Block Gowanus and the Gowanus Community Development Corporation. Solar panels to help power Kauffman Stadium

It might not make a difference in their home run totals or the speed of their pitches, but the Royals are going to be powered by the sun this year at Kauffman Stadium.

A string of 120 solar panels, 60 on each of side of the CrownVision board, have been installed atop the canopy of Kauffman Stadium's Outfield Experience. The solar panels, while unobtrusive in the appearance of the renovated stadium, can be seen from every seat and will be on display internationally during the All-Star Game on July 10 at Kauffman.

"This is a great time to put our region on display for the world and there are things that people may not know about the Kansas City region," said Chuck Caisley, KCP&L vice president of marketing and public affairs "and that is we're actually a growing epicenter nationally of advanced energy."

The solar panels face south and toward home plate, but KCP&L officials assured the Royals there would be no glare that might affect the players.

Fans at games this year at Kauffman can learn more about the panels at an educational kiosk, which will be installed in the Outfield Experience in time for the April 13 home opener against the Cleveland Indians.

The Royals also have been active in recycling at the stadium.

At this point, the solar panels will provide just part of the stadium's needed electrical power.
