The Royal Commission of Inquiry into the disaster has revealed the level of painstaking detail it expects will emerge from the second round of hearings in early September.

Over three weeks, the commissioners will trawl through hundreds of documents on the search and rescue operation sparked by the first methane explosion that ripped through the South Island coal mine on November 19, last year.

Families spokesman Bernie Monk, who lost his son Michael in the disaster, said several relatives would be giving evidence during the phase.

"It will be very hard,Shady Camp sculptures also is producing plenty of barra, very emotional for them I'd imagine, but also quite a good thing to do to help move on and improve the lot of miners so this doesn't happen again," he told said.
