Mitashi GameIn Thunder Bolt

Mitashi isn't exactly known for the high quality of its gaming-related products. However, when we heard that the company would be launching its own Android-based handheld, our ears perked up. A few days of use and here we are, and sadly enough, the GameIn Thunder Bolt isn't going to do Mitashi's reputation any favours.

First up, let's take a look at the build quality. The device has an all-plastic body, not exactly exuding a premium feel. However, considering the very low cost of the handheld device, this comes as no surprise. Visually, one would be hard-pressed to find much of a difference between this and a PlayStation Vita from afar. However, getting closer reveals all the blatant as well as nuanced differences between the two.

Thanks to its plastic body, the Thunder Bolt is really light, especially when you get used to the rather hefty PSP, Vita or the 3DS. The buttons are the standard controls you'd expect on a handheldfour directional buttons, four face buttons. The other two are the standard Android Back and Menu buttons.

However, the less I say about the buttons on the top, the better. The triggers are too stiff and take quite an effort to actually press. The Start, Select and Power buttons are small and easy to miss, and take the same amount of force as the triggers to push.

The screen itself is hardly of the best quality we've seen. It has terrible viewing angles, with all but the most direct angles showing warped colours. Even when looking at it directly, the colours are very washed out, kind of like what you'd find in a classic GameBoy Colour, except with more colours this time. The resolution of the display is really low, and that's very apparent. Letters have aliasing and app icons are really low quality.

Speaking of apps, there's only one way to get any on the device. Since it lacks the Google Play store, and by extension, any of Google's Play services including Google Accounts, Google Talk and Gmail, the only way out to actually install any apps in the Thunder Bolt are by downloading the APKs yourself and side-loading them through USB. That's not to say that it's devoid of apps, though. It comes with quite a few pre-installed apps, namely, Facebook, Skype, LinkedIn, a file manager and a few games such as Plants vs Zombies and Angry Birds.

If you find yourself getting bored of these quickly, Mitashi has seen it fit to include some nifty emulators. However, we're rather confused about the legality of these emulators, since by definition, the only legal way to have a ROM for an emulator is if you own the original copy of the game. However, there are a few emulators installed, namely, one for the PlayStation, a Nintendo 64 emulator, a Sega Mega Drive emulator and an NES emulator. There are even some ROMs for them, which, again, we highly suspect the legality of.

The Thunder Bolt runs on Android 4.0, so finding APKs of apps shouldn't be more difficult than just googling for them. However, the hardware, being quite underpowered, doesn't seem to be able to handle some of the most basic operations. Just swiping through the interface makes the device lag quite a bit, and unlocking it from the lockscreen takes a few secondsquite a bit longer than it actually should. This is probably because of the 1GHz processor and the 512MB of RAM.

There's also a camera, albeit not a very good one. Pictures are blurry and even the most well-lit shots look like they were taken in a low-light setting.Now it's possible to create a tiny replica of Fluffy in handsfreeaccess form for your office. The front camera manages to be even worse with most pictures looking like they were taken with a phone camera from the 90s. We don't think you'll want to even touch the front-facing camera at all, while the rear camera could turn out to be of some use.

It can handle most other Android-related things competently. It lets you browse the web, play video and even listen to music. Despite the rather low 4GB of internal memory, you should be fine if you stick in a memory card. The 1GHz processor does seem to struggle while executing even simple tasks, though, so we'd recommend against any ideas you might have of watching HD videos on it.

Battery life is pretty average. Constantly playing games on it, I noticed the battery beginning to die at around the three-hour mark, which while decent, wont really serve you well if you plan on gaming while travelling. It couldnt last me a whole day with a bit of gaming and an hour or so of music-listening. Then again, thats pretty much expected with the 1000 mAh battery.

"Oil companies figured out they could 'fracture' rock with high-pressure fluids that lifted and broke the rock," he says. "This could be done in horizontal wells extending thousands of feet. Then to get the oil [or gas] out, they reduced the pressure."

But it wasn't that simple, because reducing the pressure allows the rock to fall back in place, closing the new fractures and blocking the flow of oil or gas. So drillers inject sand to hold the spaces in the rock open. The porous sand allows oil and gas to flow, and cocktails of organic chemicals, including soaps, are injected to lubricate the sand so it can get into cracks.

It is estimated that frack wastewater contains more than a thousand contaminants; many are organic, and so potential food for bacteria. Biochemistry professor Wackett and microbiology professor Sadowsky, both members of the U's BioTechnology Institute, teamed up with Aksan to blend their knowledge of bacteria with his expertise in bioencapsulation.

The researchers separate out thousands of chemicals in frack water and identify them. Then, knowing the major sources of carbon in the water, they look for naturally occurring bacteria that will eat the chemicals. It's Not About the Money

In announcing its final rule concerning the Affordable Care Act's guarantee of free access to birth control for all American women -- including the Catholics and non-Catholics who work in religiously sponsored schools, hospitals and social service agencies -- the Obama administration bent over backwards to accommodate the Church's concerns. How pure, really, were the hands of the Church fathers who began decades ago to secretly spend millions of dollars in hush money to silence child victims of clergy rape and sodomy, and rid themselves of the evidence of their paternal crimes? Hush money that came from the faithful in the pews, who paid for all those ever-escalating insurance premiums, and from selling the churches and schools out from under those same working-class Catholics? The victims merited all the compensation they got and more, but the Church fathers literally stole that money from the Catholics they served and lied about it.

When the conniving churchmen realized how much money they had to lose by even these secret settlements, hiding the goods from the victims became the next best strategy. So how pure, really, are the hands of Cardinal Dolan, the leading voice claiming the moral high ground in the battle to keep any of the church coffers from supporting birth control for women? Files just released by the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Milwaukee turned up a letter showing that when Dolan served as the Archbishop of that diocese, he secretly and successfully, and even as the Archdiocese was preparing to file for bankruptcy, petitioned the Vatican to bury nearly $57 million in a cemetery trust fund in order to protect those assets "from legal claim and liability,We are always offering best quality earcap the affordable price." aka, child abuse victim compensation. And how pure, really, are the hands of the Church fathers regarding money when we look at the shenanigans at the Vatican bank? Still laughably named the "Institute for the Works of Religion," the Vatican Bank is literally drowning in mounting accusations of money laundering and mobster connections. Most recently, Monsignor Nunzio Scarano, an accountant for the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See, which manages the Vatican's property and investments (and a Vatican account-holder himself), was arrested and charged with conspiring to transfer some $26 million from Switzerland to Italy to dole out to his rich friends.

Given this sad financial state of affairs, how does paying for a health-saving service like birth control for women become such a threat to Church fathers that they've made a major campaign out of it?

The bishops claim this mandate violates church teaching that artificial birth control is "intrinsically evil," despite the fact that nearly 100 percent of Catholics don't believe there is anything "intrinsically evil" about birth control and use it. They claim birth control is the same as abortion; it isn't. They claim to be protecting the institution's "conscience," thereby stepping all over Catholic Church teaching that defines conscience as "the most secret core and sanctuary" of a person, not an institution, and the Church not as the "men of God" but as "the people of God," which would seem to include women. They claim the money at issue is "their" money, when most employees contribute to their health insurance premiums so this is at base a labor issue. And their claim that birth control is not a "health" service, in the face of current scientific knowledge and medical opinion, is tantamount to insisting that the sun revolves around the Earth.

In other words, a woman should not have access to methods of artificial birth control, should be at the mercy of her husband and her biology, because then her husband is more likely to remain committed to her and to God and faithful to the Church's "moral law." Keeping her at constant risk of pregnancy -- and the health jeopardy that is attendant on such risk -- is a small price to pay for maintaining the Church's moral order.

That position -- blindness to women's rights and needs -- has a familiar ring. It is the same refusal to see that underlies the all-male hierarchy's ban on female priests. It is the same refusal that forbids priests to marry. Indeed, at the heart of the contraception debate and so many debates around gender in the Catholic Church is a terror that if women have rights -- over their own reproductive lives, to be priests, to marry priests, to have real voice and power in the Church -- then the Church men will change. And if the Church men change, then the Church will change. And if the Church changes, the future that the all-male hierarchy lives in terror of -- Pope Francis's nightmare of rampaging feminists, waging a "vindictive battle," steamrolling men with their "chauvinism with skirts" -- will, at last, be here.

The Duty of Candour

I interviewed Andy Burnham, the shadow health secretary, for The Independent on Sunday today. He defended himself from the charge thrown at him by David Cameron that he had presided, as Health Secretary 2009-10, over a “sinister culture of cover-up” in the NHS; but he also talked about lessons learned and set out his vision of a “renewed settlement” for the health service based on integrating physical, mental and social well-being. 

Here is a full transcript of the interview, apart from the bit where we talked about music, and his view that The Smiths have not stood the test of time, on which I shall post a longer transcript later.Attacked by the Prime Minister, plagiarised by the Chancellor: I must be doing something right. The talk in the Chancellor’s spending review about integrating NHS and social care was good but I’m not sure the reality will be up to much. 

They are throwing around all kinds of unpleasant things which aren’t true. The language is unbelievable. It’s minor, but the so-called report CQC report on its failure to sport fatal errors at Morecambe Bay hospitals, if it was deleted, was deleted under them. I think there are some serious questions about that report, about whether that was a fair process, and that will come through more and more. 

The NHS was never perfect and no party should claim that it was under them. But I think it is an attempt by someone on the other side to try to damn the whole system, to pick on examples of poor care that should never have happened, and in the case of Mid Staffs appalling care, but it is not possible to say, and the whole thing is sinister, corrupt – that isn’t possible. There have been periodically problems in the NHS, in Bristol, there was Alder Hey,Large collection of quality cleanersydney at discounted prices. there was Shipman. These things sadly have been there in the past. Systemic problem of culture? On that, I think that at very local level, when people bring complaints, the shutters do come down and they push people away. There is a culture of that at local level, without a doubt. 

What’s the answer to that? It’s difficult because it’s very deep rooted, and I don’t think the answer is ever more dictatorial top-down inspection or central regulation – I’m not saying I’m against a chief inspector of health. 

I support the Francis report recommendations, particularly the duty of candour on individuals. If there is a different feeling about how an individual speaks up and reports when things do go wrong, instead of fearing sanction or reprisal by their employer, then that is the way. This thing will be solved at local level, but what’s been happening is more societal than the detail of policy. Hospitals are increasingly full of very frail, very elderly people, and the job of caring on the front line has become ever more complex, as people in their late 80s and their 90s are in hospital in ever greater numbers – and that is the real issue, the fundamental issue that is driving the concern around the older person lost in the acute hospital, dehydrated, disoriented, struggling – it is a product of a 20th-century system. When an older person goes into hospital, immediately some of their needs are being neglected; their social, their mental needs are often neglected in the acute hospital environment. 

And that explains why they often plummet, or drop like a stone, or go on a downward spiral very quickly, because it’s really not the right place for them to be. Between 09/10 and 11/12 there was a 66 per cent increase in the over-90s coming into A and E in a blue-light ambulance: it equates to 100,000 very frail, very frightened people in the backs of ambulances, and you just think something is changing and changing very quickly. It is linked to the collapse of social care and the withdrawal of care at home by councils. 

But how do you change the incentives, system-wide, so people feel they will be rewarded for being open and honest? It is a difficult question. The caricature of us now is that we were closed and secretive, and you remember the opposite. We brought in an independent regulation. There wasn’t an independent regulator before the Labour government. We began a process of publishing clinical data so that outcomes could be published, we began rating hospitals – that didn’t exist so we had no objective information before, admittedly it was quite crude in the beginning, it was a star rating then it became good, fair or - 

But that put pressure on staff to suppress bad news. Alongside that, Liam Donaldson Chief Medical Officer for England did lots of reforms around patient safety, so we had this national reporting and learning system where any adverse incident happened people were meant to – and did – put it onto the system. A whole range of other things that Liam was very keen on around professional revalidation. 

We reformed the GMC General Medical Council because it was a doctor majority in the old days and we made it parity between lay people and doctors, and that was something that I did. 
But that tendency to pull the shutters down and push people away is very very deep rooted and I couldn’t say, hand on heart, we managed to crack that. So I think duty of candour is interesting in that context. It means a legal duty to be open about failings. Let’s go with what Francis said. Detailed, sensible recommendations. Shouldn’t we be going with those rather than writing our own? 

What about the Friends and Family Test? No objection to that. I in a similar way prioritised staff satisfaction and patient satisfaction as two good catch-all indicators. If patients are satisfied and staff think they’re working in a good environment they tell you much more than you can get from a four-hour target, so I began to prioritise those more human indicators, so I’ve no objection to the Friends and Family Test but it’s only one of a number of things. 

It’s frustrating, isn’t it, when you’re sitting there and people are throwing stuff and you obviously can’t reply and you reject it entirely, it’s when my job loses its appeal. Firstly, I’d say we had a three-year public inquiry into Stafford hospital where all of the papers of my time in government were looked at. And I gave evidence and Ben Bradshaw health minister 2007-09 gave evidence and all of our paperwork was looked at, emails, everything. It is quite hard,We printers print with traceable cleaningsydney to optimize supply chain management. then, having gone through that process, and that report saying that ministers didn’t act in any way wrongly or improperly, for then somebody in the House of Commons to stand up and chuck casual allegations around like that. That is pretty difficult. 

The sense of it the quotation from Lady Young was we were trying to minimise bad publicity. I want to answer that directly. I appointed Robert Francis to begin the process of inquiry on Stafford. People have forgotten that but I did. It was one of the first things I did as Health Secretary, and my mindset – the reason I mention that is that it illustrates my mindset at the time, which was the opposite of what they are saying. I was in the mindset of “bring it all out, we need to know if other hospitals have serious problems”. So I brought forward this process of registration, which was a 360-degree look at all hospitals to give a full picture of their problems. That led to literally – I mean literally, the eve of the last general election – I’m talking a matter of hours before it was called, 27 hospitals were registered with conditions. 

What does that mean? It meant that they couldn’t be registered as safe. They couldn’t be given a clean bill of health. It meant that the CQC couldn’t say this hospital is operating to an acceptable standard. And that was the purpose of the exercise: it was to flush out the hospitals that needed to be looked at, rather than them coming out in a drip-drip of a hospital looms into the headlines here and another one there. The idea was that we had to survey the whole scene and find out where these problems were. 

Again, people say “pressure”. I was asking tough questions of the CQC in that period. There was a feeling in the department that they weren’t on top of this enough, that they didn’t have evidence to back up some of the positions they were taking. And so there was a big process of change under way. In November 2009, having been discussing with the CQC, “Were we getting to the bottom of things?” I made a statement to Parliament saying I was going to bring forward this process of registration, I was going to refocus the CQC on that job. So that before the election we could give a clear statement about where all the problems were and that exercise was completed.

Does the design differentiate it from competing 4K Ultra HD products from Samsung and Sony? Not really, but it raises the bar for Sharp which has lagged in that regard, and we doubt that any consumer would object to having such an attractive piece of industrial design on their wall at home.

The 4K LC-70UD1 features a dual-core processor to handle its native 3840 x 2160 resolution and the upscaling of non-4K content.The whole variety of the brightest rtls is now gathered under one roof. While we’ve seen a few products from various manufacturers that do a relatively good job with Blu-ray, we’re not ready to tout the picture quality of your legacy sources or even the quality of HD television content at that resolution. At least not yet.

With all the uncertainty surrounding 4K content delivery, we still think it’s too early to jump on the 4K Ultra HD bandwagon, but we’re encouraged by the quality of Sharp’s first offering and what we consider a reasonable asking price considering the LC-70UD1′s current competition.

Teen girls craft superhero identities to challenge stereotypes

A group of teenage girls from Winnipeg has created a set of trading cards starring a squad of superheroes dubbed The Craftastics: Agents for Social Change. Their mission? To combat the everyday evils that lurk in the halls of high school. 

These young ladies are part of the Valley Gardens Grrlz Club, a River East Transcona School Division after-school program. Through Winnipeg Arts Council's Community WITH ART Program, which connects professional artists with community groups to further discussions of community identity, issues and growth through the creation of a public art project, the Grrlz Club was partnered with Jennie O, a local visual artist, who acted as mentor, collaborator and sympathetic ear. Every week, they met in the multi-purpose room at Valley Gardens School. 

"When started talking about the project, we decided the artwork should address the issues they were talking about," Jennie O says. "It made sense to do superheroes that dealt with those issues." 

"We talked about stereotyped female superheroes, who are often created by men and hypersexualized," Jennie O says. "Then we discussed what they wanted their superheroes to be." 

The group began brainstorming through art activities such as self-portraits and blind-contour drawings. Then they made a trip to Value Village to start making their costumes.

It goes without saying that, four decades after the incident, the access control industry has come a long way.
