Former co-worker describes attitude of capital murder suspect

Testimony in the trial of a former dialysis nurse accused of killing five patients began Tuesday morning with another former DaVita nurse back on the stand.

Kimberly Clark Saenz, 38, of Pollok,We offer the best ventilationsystem, is charged with capital murder and five counts of aggravated assault. She allegedly injected bleach into the bloodstream of kidney dialysis patients.

Candace Lackey told the jury that she worked for DaVita as a nurse, during the time of incidents in April 2008. She testified that she started working as a nurse at Woodland Heights.

"It was a time of confusion, great anxiety," said the witness. "It seemed like we couldn't figure out why it was happening."

District Attorney Clyde Herrington then asked the witness about labeling of syringes. He asked the proper procedure for disposing of needles after using them to administer medicine. He asked if needles are re-capped after use.

"That is considered dangerous. You can accidentally stick yourself with a contaminated needle," said Lackey.

Herrington questioned the witness why the presence of bleach would be in a sharps container. Previous testimony says needles inside the container tested positive for bleach.

"There really wouldn't be any reason for bleach in a sharps container," said Lackey.Learn all about solarpanel,

The prosecution then turned to ask about Saenz's behavior in the workplace.

"Did she [Saenz] like her job?" said Herrington.

The witness revealed that she did not get the impression that Saenz truly enjoyed her job. Lackey also mentioned that there were plenty of nurses who did not like certain patients.

"She would not come in with a smile when we would be laughing and joking and getting ready for the day," said Lackey.

The witness testified that Saenz was hired just a couple weeks before she was hired.

"I know at one point that she was going to resign and then changed her mind," said Lackey.

The defense argued that working in dialysis is not for everyone. He pointed out that Lackey, herself, also left the practice of dialysis. Saenz's attorney, Ryan Deaton asked why the witness quit DaVita. Lackey replied that it was not only the deaths during April, but it was also the large number of illnesses that occurred at the clinic.

"Honestly,Choose from our large selection of cableties, I can't remember how many people became sick because it became a blur," said Lackey.

Deaton asked the witness was it solely the incidents in April 2008 that led her to quit her job in August 2008.

"There were other factors," said Lackey. "I felt so much anxiety because I could not reconcile what had happened. I felt like I had no control in that area. And, I felt like it might affect my performance."

She testified that other patients got sick in April, other than just those listed on the indictment.

"She [Sharon Smith] had difficulty at times," said the witness.

With an objection from the prosecution and no further questions, the witness was dismissed.

The defense called upon the next witness, who testified to being a friend of Sharon Smith, to the stand.

Deaton asked the witness her opinion of Smith before both counsels dismissed her from the stand.

Next, the defense called upon Sharon Smith.

"Do you remember telling Kim Saenz to give medications to Opal Few?" said Deaton.

The witness recalled asking Saenz if she was giving Few medications, and Smith said Saenz said she was giving the patient her medicine.

"What did you do after Ms. Few coded?" said Deaton.

The witness replied that she followed the clinic's CPR protocol and called the medical director.

With no questions from the prosecution, Smith was dismissed from the stand.

The defense called upon Danielle Hartsville, who testified that she was newly employed at the Lufkin DaVita Clinic in April 2008. She said she was hired in December, following her graduation.

Deaton asked the witness to time out and describe her schedule on April 26, 2008. The witness recalled she was missing a patient that day, one did not come in. So, she says she called in Opal Few.

"Was that something that the patients liked if they could get on early?"

The witness replied that some patients did and some didn't like getting their dialysis treatment earlier rather than later.

"When you get meds, do they come with stickers?" said Deaton.

"They come with pre-printed labels," said the witness.

The witness testified that she gathered medicine that's labeled at the nurse's station. After gathering medicine, she said she saw Few's machine was going off and she appeared sick.

A new paint variant created by local paint manufacturer Boysen contains modified titanium dioxides, which are designed to break down toxic fumes into harmless substances.

Though titanium dioxide is commonly used in regular paint, its molecules in the modified version are micronized, a process that compresses them 10-fold to enhance their intrinsic ability to break down toxic substances when activated by light.

"It acts as a photo catalyst and in the presence of sunlight or artificial lighting it brings down noxious gases such as nitrogen dioxides and other VOCs in the air," said Patrick Negrete, Boysen Project Management Engineer.

Hargarten fell into the beer tapper niche two years ago when mutual friends put him in touch with Jeff Hamilton, president of Sprecher Brewing Company.

Sprecher is a large part of Replica Masters' current business. Hargarten says Sprecher is always coming out with new beers, which of course need new tapper handles to properly represent them and this suits him just fine – even though he's often too busy to pursue other art projects.

"When I'm busy, I never have down time to do art, but when it's slow, I'm panicked to find something to make money," he says.

Born in Milwaukee, Hargarten moved all over during his younger years, returning to Milwaukee to earn a sculpture degree at School of the Arts (now MIAD) and work at Heart Bronze Fine Art Foundry, now Vanguard Sculpture Services, 3374 W. Hopkins St.

Ben Perrick, a resident of the psychiatric institution for most of his life, displayed what the University of Pennsylvania researchers considered classic symptoms of autism. His chart, however, said he was schizophrenic and mentally retarded.

Delving into the file, the researchers learned that as a 10-year-old, Perrick had seen Dr. Leo Kanner, the psychiatrist who discovered autism. In his notes from 1954, Kanner described Perrick as “a child who is self centered, withdrawn, and unable to relate to other people,” and recommended that he be committed.

Later, other doctors relabelled Perrick. The autism diagnosis was forgotten.

The researchers found 13 other patients with unrecognized autism in the Norristown hospital — about 10 per cent of the residents they evaluated. It was a sign of how medical standards and social attitudes toward the disorder have shifted.

Over the last two decades, estimates of the autism rate in children in the U.S. and Canada have climbed twentyfold. Many scientists believe the increase has been driven largely by an expanded definition of the disorder and more vigorous efforts to identify it.

Scientists are just beginning to find cases that were overlooked or called something else in an earlier era. If their research shows that autism has always been present at roughly the same rate as today, it could ease worries that an epidemic is on the loose.

By looking into the past, scientists also hope to deepen their understanding of how autism unfolds over a lifetime.

What happened to all the people who never got diagnosed? Where are they?

Like Perrick, who died in 2009, some spent their lives in institutions. Mental hospitals have largely been emptied over the last four decades, but the remaining population in the U.S. probably includes about 5,000 people with undiagnosed autism, said David Mandell, a psychiatric epidemiologist who led the Norristown study.

Many more are thought to be in prisons, homeless shelters and wherever else social misfits are clustered.

But evidence suggests the vast majority are not segregated from society — they are hiding in plain sight. Most probably never will be identified, but a picture of their lives is starting to emerge from those who have been.

They live in households, sometimes alone, sometimes with the support of their parents, sometimes even with spouses. Many were bullied as children and still struggle to connect with others. Some were able to find jobs that fit their strengths and partners who understand them.

The only study to look for autistic adults in a national population was conducted in Britain and published in 2009. Investigators interviewed 7,461 adults selected as a representative sample of the country and conducted 618 intensive evaluations.

The British study found it didn’t matter whether the adults were in their 20s or their 80s. The rate of autism was the same for both groups.

“That would seem to imply the incidence has not changed very much,” said Dr. Terry Brugha, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Leicester who led the study. He added the findings were not conclusive and more research is needed.

None of the adults included in the study had an existing diagnosis of autism, though in a few instances relatives told researchers they had suspected it.

Still, as more children are being diagnosed with autism, more adults are wondering if they have it, too.

Karl Wittig, a retired engineer from New York, had always questioned why so few social skills came naturally to him.

A diary his mother kept in the 1950s suggests he was not an ordinary child. “This last few weeks, he doesn’t pile the blocks any more,” she wrote when he was two. “He likes to put one next to the other, making a big row of 48.”

Two years later, he talked non-stop about wires, switches, light bulbs and Thomas Edison.

Wittig went on to earn undergraduate and master’s degrees from Cornell University and New York University in physics, electrical engineering and computer science. In the research laboratories where he worked, he felt he fit in.

“I went into a field full of eccentric people,” Witting recalled. “I was just another eccentric person.”

Wittig said he eventually figured out how to behave in social situations — to refrain from correcting other people’s mistakes, flaunting his math abilities or rambling on about his own interests. He married a former nun 18 years his senior. She died of cancer after two decades together. Wittig described the marriage as happy.

I spoke with a couple managers in my favorite Chick-fil-A restaurant in Lilburn, and I wondered how many poor kids had never tasted the tastiest chicken sandwich on earth. They wondered too.

New Wave relocates to large Cleveland site

New Wave Plastics was getting cramped in its 20,000-square-foot building in Medina, Ohio. So the 5-year-old recycler moved north to Cleveland — into a former heavy-manufacturing building with 20 cranes and 120,000 square feet of space.

The giant building will help New Wave Plastics continue to expand beyond its original core of credit card waste into a broad-based recycler of all types of plastic, and even do brokering of some scrap metal, company officials said.

In Cleveland, the main bay has cranes with a lifting capacity of more than 200,000 pounds, said T.R. Mitchell, who co-owns New Wave with Tony Lotts.

Mitchell said New Wave needs all that space to classify, process and store different materials, then find buyers. "The distribution side of our business is big.is the 'solar panel revolution' upon us? We need that amount of space for storage," he said.

Mitchell said that recycling of credit card waste accounts for about 10 percent of total business today. But in 2006, when Mitchell teamed with Tony Lotts, credit card scrap was the company's only market — and ended up providing the link to the big building in Cleveland.

Part of the Cleveland industrial building also used to manufacture presses to laminate credit cards. As the vice president of sales and marketing, Lotts knew all the players in that industry. So it was natural that, when Lotts and Mitchell began talking about business opportunities in recycling, credit card waste came up.

"We were trying to figure out, OK, what material would we start with?" Mitchell recalled. "We didn't want to be a broker, or somebody who's just staging plastics for overseas sales. So we said let's look at the credit card industry and see what kind of stuff they're generating."

They picked up a client in the Cleveland area, then began working with the Boltaron Performance Products LLC plant in Newcomerstown, Ohio, a major maker of calendered PVC credit card stock.

Klockner Pentaplast Group bought the card stock and rigid graphic arts business last year, and now New Wave supplies Kl?ckner with the recycled PVC credit card material.

When they founded New Wave, the partners recognized that credit card stock recycling was an underserved market. Credit card companies buy PVC sheet stock, then laminate and produce the finished cards. They generate trim waste.When the stone sits in the kidney stone,

The card makers were selling to local recyclers, which exported the material outside of the United States, Mitchell said. Much of it also ended up in landfills.

Lotts said New Wave filled a need. "Recycling in the card market was not very big. Nobody had developed any use for the material because of the contamination problem," he said. "That's when T.R.How is TMJ pain treated? and I partnered up, and we developed some proprietary processes for separating this material. That's what really opened the door for us to move into this market."

New Wave closed the loop, by developing a technology to separate credit card waste and identify the clean material. The material gets reprocessed and then shipped back to the card stock manufacturer, to be made into new credit card stock.

"We had a perfect solution for taking it out of the landfill," Lotts said. The company's tag line is: "giving the earth a credit."

Mitchell said delivering high-quality recycled material is critical to the credit card sector.

"Credit card stock is very sensitive. You can't have contaminants. You have to print on it, and if it's going through a printing press, you can scorch the blanket. And PVC's not forgiving, like some other polymers. So we need to send them only very, very clean material," he said.

Of course, the industry is not just about credit cards. The proliferation of debit cards, automated teller cards, smart cards and frequent shopper cards ensures a steady stream of recycled material.

When the PVC regrind is not clean enough for credit cards, New Wave sells it to the building products sector.

The company set up a complete distribution system, staging empty semi-trailers at customer plants, and then picking the full ones up. "We supply them with gaylords and pallets to restock them, to fill the containers," Mitchell said.
