Downtown Dexter is home to two new arts and crafts-based businesses that opened their doors this week.

Polly's Paper Studio, located at 3238 Broad St., is a specialty boutique that sells hundreds of items for scrapbooking, handmade cards, and other paper crafts. Across the street, Lucky Penny Mosaics, located at 3205 Broad St., features a variety of classes for basic and advanced mosaic art instruction.

"We really love the family appeal and artsy vibe of Dexter," Polly's owner Ginny Nemchak said about her decision to open the store. "With all the downtown restaurants and stores,The beddinges sofa bed slipcover is a good ， Dexter has this neighborhood feel but it's also a destination location.GOpromos offers a wide selection of promotional items and personalized gifts."

Nemchak has been operating Polly's Paper Studio in Pinckney for the past two years, but decided to relocate the business to Dexter to capitilize on traffic from Ann Arbor and other surrounding communities.

"Fortunately, scrapbooking shops are few and far between, and if you want the more exclusive brands sometimes you have to travel. The nature of the craft makes our shop a destination spot that will hopefully bring other people into town, which will help other businesses as well," Nemchak said.

With a 20-year career in retail, Nemchak said she decided to open her own business after a friend turned her onto scrapbooking.

"I was a stay-at-home mom for several years, but I also like to work, so opening my own business allowed me to do something I enjoy while still getting to spend time with my family," she said.

The store offers 1,800 paper patterns, adhesives, embellishments and other scrapbooking products. It will also offer classes in handmade card making, scrapbooking and altered art projects.

"Paper crafting in general is an afforable hobby, and I think people like to give a handcrafted item as a gift because it's more personable. Lisa Wandres, co-owner of Artistica in Dexter, opened Lucky Penny Mosaics above Life is Good, to expand her home-based mosaic classes. Wandres, who considers herself an "artist by accident" began her lifelong love affair with mosaics 10 years ago after learning about the craft.

"I was curious (about art) and discoverd courses on mosaic and luckily it turned out to be my thing," Wandres explained. "I have since ... dedicated myself to leaning more about mosaics and also to broadening my artistic influences."

Wandres has been selling work on commission with moderate success, which led to her decision to offer classes of her own for students.

"Mosaic is coming back in the art world and it's coming back as an art form, transcending the (stigma) of a casual hobby," she said.

The studio will offer a four-week two-hour basics class for $135, with materials and supplies. Wandres will also offer studio time for intermediate level students, at $10 an hour. Students will learn about cutting, grinding and working with glass cutting techniques. Other workshops include a pet portraiture project (four weeks, $135), and mosaic tables (six weeks, $165).

"Anyone can do a mosaic. You don't have to be artistic or know how to draw," Wandres said. "I want this to be a place where beginners and advanced artists come to work. Jess Conda, impresaria of her punk-theater kingdom

During a hectic St. Patrick's Day weekend, Jess Conda went to her usual jobs - waiting tables at Fergie's Pub downtown, heading north for her gig at Northern Liberties' after-hours Ruba Club - then biked off to the Crane Arts Building's new Pig Iron Theater School, where she's part of the freshman class.

Hunterdon County wrestlers win national prep titles for Blair Academy

A bout with kidney stones was just about the last type of battle Todd Preston wanted to think about while looking ahead to the National Prep Tournament.

Yet,Silicone moldmaking Rubber, a mere two days prior to the prep nationals, the Union Township resident and Blair Academy senior was in Newton Medical Center suffering with the painful condition.

But once Preston stepped onto the mat at Lehigh University’s Stabler Arena in Bethlehem, Pa. for the Feb. 24-25 tourney, it was back to business as usual. He went on to capture his third straight national prep championship, eventually taking the 138-pound final in triple overtime.

The Harvard University-bound Preston, seeded No. 1, overcame a tough few days leading up to the nationals to cap his high school career with a three-peat.

“I was concerned with how I was going to wrestle,” said Preston. “So the basic thing was to keep my head straight and put everything behind me. When the tournament began I was very tired, but I knew it was all kind of mental.”

Ranked third nationally by Open Mat, Preston eliminated all challengers before tangling with Alfred Bannister of Bishop McNamara in the title match. Preston finally emerged with a 5-4 triple-OT verdict via an escape in the final rideout.

Preston, who finished the season with an overall 31-1 record, had edged Bannister 1-0 for the Beast of the East Tournament championship in December.

His only loss all winter was by a 3-1 margin to Austin Matthews of Reynolds (Pa.) High in the semifinals of the Walsh Ironman Tournament in early December. Preston then topped Bannister the following week and won the PowerAde Christmas Tournament.

“After the loss I just moved on and used it as a motivating factor,” said Preston, who won national preps at the 130 weight class the previous two years.

Parsons, from Clinton Township, didn’t encounter nearly as much drama in his title bout at 152, where he dominated Myles Martin of Maryland’s McDonogh School 6-1.

“I felt in control pretty much the entire match,” said the top-seeded Parsons, who wrapped up his campaign with a 36-4 record. “I knew he’d shoot low shots so I had to keep my defense low and tie him up and take his space away. That was pretty much my match strategy.”

Parsons had a rougher go of it in his semifinal against Greg Bacci of Malvern (Pa.) Prep. Bacci reversed and turned him in the second period, also injuring Parsons’ right elbow in the process, before the Buccaneer got back to his feet, took Bacci down and put him on his back en route to a 6-4 decision.

“I was familiar with a lot of the other wrestlers going into the tournament,” said Parsons. “I’d seen a lot of them during the season and also as a sophomore. So I knew where I was and I just had to go out and take it.”

But there was never a doubt in his mind his future was up in Blairstown with Blair Academy’s storied program — and then, taking it another step, even at Harvard. Preston’s brother, Rob, was a three-time national prep champion at the lower weights while at Blair Academy and went on to Harvard, where he enjoyed a superb career as well before graduating in 2008.

“At Blair the academics are like no other and the wrestling is incomparable,” said Preston. “I knew I’d be able to achieve my goals academically and athletically by coming to Blair.”

With the Buccaneers, Preston has been under the tutelage of Head Coach Jeff Buxton and three outstanding assistants. Buxton has built Blair’s program into arguably the nation’s finest, sending numerous grapplers on to Division 1 schools. One of them, High Bridge native and University of Michigan senior Kellen Russell, won his second straight NCAA championship at 141 pounds last weekend.

Blair, which was unbeaten this season, won its 32nd straight national prep crown at Lehigh and Preston and Parsons were among nine Bucs who took first place.

“Coach Buxton is the greatest coach I’ve ever seen,” said Preston. “He knows how to work with kids and at times he may be tough,What are some types of moulds? but he’s doing multiple things at once. He’s not only showing you how to be a great wrestler but also how to be a mentally tough student-athlete. He keeps our minds straight in the classroom and our minds in the right place on the mat.”

Preston, who carries a 4.6 grade-point average on a 6.0 scale while taking honors and AP classes, also has been counting on continuing his education at Harvard ever since his brother went to the Ivy League school in Cambridge, Mass. He’ll likely major in economics or finance.

Preston will compete in the Senior Nationals in Virginia Beach, Va., in two weeks before transitioning to freestyle for the summer.

A Clinton Township Middle School graduate, Parsons realized by the time he was in seventh grade that he’d probably be joining his buddy, Preston, at Blair Academy because that was the place and Buxton was the coach to take his wrestling talents to the maximum.

“I have to say Coach Buxton is a phenomenal coach — a genius,” said Parsons. “He’s been there so many years and it’s just nice to have him and three assistants walking around the room making sure everyone is doing everything the right way.”

Parsons, who’s most interested in attending Harvard or the U.S. Military Academy at this point, is now working into freestyle mode and will wrestle in the FILA Junior National Tournament next month and the Cadet/Junior Nationals in Fargo, N.D. in July.

'Earth chapel' inaugurated in Bacolod

CBCPNews, the official news service provider of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), said that the construction of the chapel was a collaborative effort of three Negrense artists who offered their talents and skills pro bono to build the Earth Chapel. The chapel structure was made of indigenous and locally available materials such as mud, bamboo, rice straw and stalk and cogon grass and recycled objects including wine bottles, discarded tiles, discarded wood slabs and other bits and pieces.

Brother Tagoy Jakosalem, a Recollect friar and an official presenter of The Climate Reality Project,To interact with beddinges, did the interior of the chapel and incorporated renewable energy into the structure, making the chapel true to form and function in its liturgical scheme.

“The chapel is the first solar-powered religious edifice in the country. It is envisioned to have both a sound spiritual and environmental atmosphere. LED lights are used to illumine the interior. Wine bottles are incorporated in the structure, natural lighting effects emanating from the green-colored wine bottles, serving as recyclable stained-glass windows,” said Jakosalem, who is also an environmentalist personally trained by Nobel Laureate and former US Vice President Al Gore through The Climate Reality Project.

The other artists who worked with Jakosalem were Marisol Alquizar, a visual artist who spends her time building mud houses in Negros Island, and Nunelucio Alvarado, a leading social-realist painter in the country.

Alquizar designed the chapel while Alvarado transformed his pen and ink version of “Kristo ni Alvarado” into a colorful mosaic as the chapel’s centerpiece.

“Working on a mud chapel is a labor intensive exercise; that truly needs collective manpower. The chapel started its skeleton from the hands of volunteer students, who are all active members of the Tsinelas of Hope, offering their time to give life to the chapel,” Jakosalem said.

“We are envisioning the chapel to be the center of our ecological reflection, owing to the spiritual inspiration of our Creator; hoping to be transformed to be men and women of faith committed to protect and preserve the earth,Learn all about solarpanel,” he added.

US govt sets new tariffs on China solar panels

The Commerce Department is imposing new import fees on solar panels made in China, finding that the Chinese government is improperly giving subsidies to manufacturers of the panels there.

The Commerce Department said Tuesday it has found on a preliminary basis that Chinese solar panel makers have received government subsidies of 2.9 percent to 4.73 percent. Therefore, the department said, tariffs in the same proportions will be charged on Chinese panels imported into the U.S., depending on which company makes them.

The tariff amounts are considered small, but the decision could ratchet up trade tensions between the U.S. and China. Several U.S. solar panel makers had asked the government to impose steep tariffs on Chinese imports. They are struggling against stiff competition from China as well as weakening demand in Europe and other key markets, just as President Barack Obama is working to promote renewable energy.

"Today's announcement affirms what U.S. manufacturers have long known: Chinese manufacturers have received unfair ... subsidies," Steve Ostrenga, CEO of Helios Solar Works in Milwaukee, said in a statement. The company is a member of a group called the Coalition for American Solar Manufacturing.

On the other side, some U.S. companies argue that low-priced Chinese imports have helped consumers and promote rapid growth of the industry.

The new tariffs are low, making the Commerce Department decision "a relatively positive outcome for the U.S. solar industry and its 100,000 employees," said Jigar Shah, president of the Coalition for Affordable Solar Energy. Commerce said it was putting off until May 17 a decision on whether Chinese companies are dumping the solar panels on world markets, selling them below cost. Tariffs for dumping cases usually are much steeper than those intended to counteract subsidies.

Also, because the decision on subsidy-related tariffs is preliminary, the amount of those tariffs could eventually be changed.

"Today's decision by the Commerce Department is a signal that China's unfair trade practices in the solar energy industry may soon be remedied, giving American producers a more level playing field on which to compete," Sen. Ron Wyden, D-Ore., said following the announcement. "As the administration continues its investigation into exposing China's subsidies, and especially into the question of dumping, I anticipate that the tariff margins will significantly swell."

Ex-jail officer to take stand

Testimony continued for nearly four hours Tuesday as prosecutors worked to cement their case against former Washington County Jail supervisor Dean Ketelsen, with Ketelsen expected to take the stand Thursday.

Washington County Prosecutor Jim Schneider said he has just one witness left to call in the case against Ketelsen, 60, of Lowell, who is accused of taking about 1,400 Tramadol pills from inmates at the Washington County Jail over a two-year period. He faces up to 18 months in jail.

Nine witnesses took the stand Tuesday, the second day of the trial, with eight of them speaking for the prosecution while one defense witness was called out of order to accommodate the schedule of Dr. Edward Tappel.

The bulk of Tuesday's testimony was from Washington County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Mark Warden, who was one of the officers who interviewed Ketelsen in connection with the missing Tramadol pills.

"This investigation led us to one person. Unfortunately, it was Dean Ketelsen," Warden said.

Warden's testimony sparked debate between Schneider and defense attorney Rolf Baumgartel. During the investigation Ketelsen submitted to a polygraph - which he has said he passed - and Baumgartel argued investigators remained focused on Ketelsen despite their own tools indicating he was not guilty.

The lead investigator on the case, Detective Mark Johnson, the lone prosecution witness yet to testify, did not feel comfortable conducting the interview due to friendship with Ketelsen.

Tramadol is considered a non-controlled substance by the state of Ohio, but the Washington County Jail and the OARRS program now consider it controlled.

"It's a non-controlled substance, but it is recorded in that system (OARRS)," Francis said.

Of 87 prescriptions filled by Ketelsen, virtually all were prescribed by Tappel. Dr. Robert Grzonka, Dr. Michael Brockett and Dr.To interact with beddinges, Valerie Rigg also prescribed Tramadol for Ketelsen.

Brockett and Rigg gave those prescriptions while filling in for Tappel in his office, and Tappel said he was aware of Ketelsen's visit to Grzonka.

Warm weather brings earlier allergies

It's still less than a week before the official start of spring, but the warm weather is already in full bloom - as are the allergies.

Once the morning dew burns off the trees, it opens up the trees to release pollen. I think we’re in for a long spring."

Though the warmer temperatures have led to a lot of blooming flowers, Harper said it’s actually the trees that will do the most damage for those who suffer from spring allergies.

"It depends on what you’re allergic to," he said. "Local trees pollinate at slightly different times. That pollen is lighter and can travel for miles and miles and miles. We’ll get tree pollen from the area as well as pollen from trees in West Virginia or potentially as far away as Virginia. The southern states are already starting to get into the full pollen season, and we’re downwind of that."

Trees won’t be the only problem spring allergy sufferers will face this season. Just as any other spring, there are indoor and outdoor allergens that could pose some problems.

"There will also be problems with house dust mites – an indoor allergen – and with mold," Harper said. Walker’s past comes back to haunt him

We’ve got the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Dan Bice to thank for doing the research that shows once again why politicians who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.

At this point in the locavore narrative, urban chicken-keeping has vocal advocates and an adamant opposition. Some cities welcome backyard poultry with open arms, while others are more skeptical. Blountville farmers market hopes to have permanent shed

Wendi Niebruegge returned to the family farm six years ago and is playing a key role in Sullivan County’s agriculture community and an effort to establish a more permanent farmers market here.

“I love being able to see my daughters play in the same trees that I played in when I was young,” she said.

Her farm, Indian Brook Farm, was founded nearly 100 years ago just outside Blountville. Named after a spring that runs through the property where Native Americans gathered water, the farm features rolling hills and pasture land.

Niebruegge’s father, Haynes Pendergrass, grew tobacco and corn on roughly 50 acres when she was young. The work was hard. Tobacco is labor intensive, but Pendergrass said he enjoyed working the land. He held down a regular job at Eastman Kodak during the day and tended to the farm in his free time.

His daughter loved growing up on the farm, Pendergrass remembers. Niebruegge, 41, was involved in 4-H and spent a lot of her free time riding tractors and tackling tasks around the farm.Find out the facts about coldsore, She wasn’t afraid to get her hands dirty.

After high school, Niebruegge moved way, got married and settled down with her husband, Craig, in South Carolina. Then one day her husband returned from a run during a visit to the farm and talked about moving to Tennessee, surprising Niebruegge.

In the mid-1990s, Pendergrass had stopped growing tobacco and grazed cattle on the original 50 acres and 50 acres that were leased. He was getting older and could use the help.

Niebruegge and her husband talked about growing natural beef and free-range chickens at the farm. They wanted to take advantage of the budding local food movement and the return to more naturally grown food. The couple convinced Pendergrass to let them manage the farm.

“When we were on the mule [above the farm], before we moved, we would dream and think about who would buy the products,” Niebruegge said.

The family bought the house next to the farm and built a greenhouse and started a small garden plot. The pasture was converted to organic fertilizers. A chicken coop was constructed.

The farm started to sell the meat, produce and eggs directly to the public. The response was positive.

Two years ago, Niebruegge was contacted about a farmers market that was starting in Blountville. Sullivan County Extension was making the parking lot available at the Sullivan County offices and was looking for those who wanted to sell their produce.

When the market opened, Niebruegge sold meat and eggs. Before she knew it, she had been recruited and was named president of the newly formed Blountville Farmers Market board.

Over the last two years, the market has become more organized. Bylaws are being drafted and the market is seeking formal non-profit status. At the same time, a new location is being sought as the parking lot is exposed to the elements, both rain and sun.

The board decided to build a covered pavilion in Blountville. The challenge now is funding. Grants were sought, and Farm Credit Services and the Tennessee Department of Agriculture awarded the market a total of $4,000. The market board can contribute a couple more thousand dollars to the pavilion project but around $7,000 or $8,000 is still needed.

The market is soliciting donations from local businesses for the remaining funds.

Niebruegge wants agriculture to thrive in Sullivan County and knows the market can play an important role. She sees demand increasing for locally grown agriculture products and has watched her own business grow over the last two years.

She is amazed at how many people contact her and want to purchase products directly from the farm. She sends out weekly emails on what products are available. In the beginning, friends were the only buyers. Eventually, friends of friends inquired about buying meat or vegetables. Many are embracing a healthier lifestyle, as evidenced by other local farmers markets, in Bristol and Abingdon, that have proven to be popular and successful.

“So many people buy our sweet corn because it is non-GMO [genetically modified],” Niebruegge said.

All of this has made Niebruegge excited about the future.

“We are so blessed that people like what we are doing,” she said.

To make things interesting around the farm, her husband is always experimenting. He created a new seed germination system in the greenhouse and a gate system in the pasture. Last year, he wanted to grow turkeys at the farm. Like the chickens, the turkeys roam freely.

“One day, I walk outside and the UPS guy is backing up across the driveway,” Niebruegge said. “He said, ‘What is that?’”

An adult turkey in the driveway scared the driver.

Niebruegge said the best part about returning to the farm has been family. Her dad still helps around the farm, and Pendergrass likes the farm’s direction.
