Missoula coach to guide regional team at showcase

Every time Matt Cavanaugh tries to get out of coaching hockey, it pulls him back in.

The 30-year-old Sidney native is a small-business owner, a husband, a father of two and has been head coach of the Missoula Bruins high school hockey team the last three winters.

The tournament, put on by USA Hockey and hosted by the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Hockey League, features pool-play contests Wednesday-Friday. Quarterfinals, semifinals and consolation games are Saturday, prior to the tournament championship game next Sunday.

The event is designed for high school hockey players from around the nation to compete against the country’s best and for them to have the opportunity to be seen by every major hockey institution in North America, from Junior clubs, to colleges, to the National Hockey League.

Cavanaugh assisted Team Northwest at the tournament a year ago, when four Missoula players – Cody Jahrig, Anders Nord, Erik Muskett and Grant Woody – were selected by Greg Lian of Gillette, Wyo., to compete in Pittsburgh.

This year, Lian handed the keys for Team Northwest to Cavanaugh, who selected his roster of 16 that includes six players from Wyoming, one from Idaho and 11 from Montana. Among those from the Treasure State are the three forwards from the Missoula Bruins’ top line this season in JJ O’Bannon, Blue Hayler and Erik Hartzell.

O’Bannon is ready for the challenge and happy to be playing for Cavanaugh in Pittsburgh.

“I’m really excited for it,” he said. “The guys from our team who went last year said it was a really unique experience and I’m really looking forward to it. And when you know your coach and his system and he knows you, you’re already at a big advantage.”

But O’Bannon was more than candid when asked if it might be difficult to suddenly become teammates with the six players from Great Falls and one each from programs in Helena and Billings on Team Northwest.

“It’s going to be very tough,” O’Bannon said. “A lot of these guys, I do not get along with. It’s going to be interesting, for sure.”

“No one really thinks of Montana in particular as a hockey state,” said Hayler. “It’s really not when you look at the big picture. With a year of America’s Showcase experience under his belt, Cavanaugh knows the makeup of a successful team at the event. That’s why he’s chosen a mix of scoring forwards, stay-at-home and rushing defensemen and kids he calls “grinders.”

“Erik Hartzell is a grinder,” said Cavanaugh, who selected Hartzell after an injury opened up an extra roster spot on Team Northwest. “For years and years and years, he’s won our grinder award. That’s why I don’t have any issues taking Erik because if I asked Erik to lay down in front of a 100-mile-an-hour slap shot, he’d do it in a heartbeat.”

You're never too old to play with dolls

There is no age limit to playing with toys and that’s part of the reason a handful of Sew What Club members and friends still have time for dolls.

She is the instigator for this activity, claim Cheryl Morton and Gerry McDonagh.

“You were always talking about your dolls. I wanted to come over and see them,I found them to have sharp edges where the injectionmoldes came together while production. so I did,” recalled McDonagh. “I said ‘I’d like to learn how to do that’.”

“I said come over any time and I’ll show you,” said Cotterill. “That was seven years ago.”

The group and passion grew unexpectedly when the Cotterills added a sun room on to their home.

“The contractor came in midway, saw the monk’s bench with the dolls in our entryway and said his mum had one just like it and made dolls,” she said.

His mum is Marion Stapp and like Cotterill and her husband was born in England. Stapp had a doll hospital and a shop outside of London and opened another one in Statesboro when she moved to the States. She now lives in Savannah and the two women are often on the road competing in numerous handmade doll competitions for which they bring back medals and red and blue ribbons.

“It’s like a blank canvas,” said Cotterill. “It’s such fun when you bring it to life.”

“That was very clever,” the other doll makers agreed.

Before the dolls are dressed, though, there are a number of steps required to make the porcelain parts. That begins with pouring porcelain slip into molds for the head, body, arms and legs.

The porous molds draw the moisture out of the liquid, creating a skin inside the mold.

“After it’s in there about five minutes or until it’s the thickness of a dime, you break through the opening in the mold and pour out the excess,” Cotterill explained. “Then you let it dry completely overnight, depending on the weather.Find rubberhose companies from India. Then it’s soft-fired.”

The soft firing enables the workers to clean the piece either in water or with sand paper. Once it is cleaned, then it is “high fired” at about 2200-2400 degrees. It then comes out bisque porcelain. The head is often fired five or six times between painting details.

“The paint is water based and you don’t want to smudge the details just as you get the eyelashes just right,” Cotterill said.

In the sun room, there’s much laughter and conversation as the ladies pour over “The Blue Book of Dolls and Values,” a guide with photos, details, a bit of background and — as the title says — values.

“I’m going to read this over the phone to Brian, my son, the value of the dolls,” McDonagh joked. “I’m not getting full respect here.”

“When I started in the mid ‘80s, there used to be a lot of doll makers,” Cotterill said. “There aren’t so many now.”

At the latest doll convention in Houston, Cotterill and Stapp were among about 60 delegates of the Doll Artisans Guild, including 10 women from the United Kingdom. There were 60 doll entries and competition is keen.

“You see some extraordinary things,” Cotterill said. “My friend and teacher from Louisville only entered one doll but she got seven awards, including best in show for antique dolls.”

As she helps Hilary Dancey put nearly invisible eyelashes on a caroler’s head, Stapp puts a fired piece into a small pan of water in preparation for cleaning the mold edges and rough spots. Morton, still working on the eyes, holds it up for McDonagh, asking how the eyes looked.

“That’s really why we get together,” said Rhoda Paxton as she sands down the edges on some small pieces. “We check each others work.”

For over 30 years, my father made his living as a pattern maker. He loved this exclusive and somewhat mysterious industrial trade that involved a unique mix of art and science.

When I tell people what my dad did for a living, I often get blank stares, or the impression that the person believes my father worked in textiles or sewing. In metalsmithing, it could be compared in some respects to the process of "lost-wax casting." It also took a certain perceptual vision and artist's eye. You had to be good at math, but also highly skilled as a woodworker to do the work.

As I wrote many poems influenced by the steel city landscape of Johnstown and this blue-collar trade, I peppered my father with more questions. I wanted to know more about a job that involved painstaking work that would be cast aside for a new, fresh metamorphosis.

First, Rio decried the "absolute shakedown" Komen allegedly faced from critics who responded to the foundation's funding decree. Then, with her anger rising, Rios condemned Planned Parenthood for wallowing "in the business of killing women."

Keep in mind, the Komen fight was one that conservatives had wanted the foundation to wage for years. But when it did, and when it lost the battle, a conservative bully on Fox News suddenly cried foul,Buy a chickencoop direct & save. denounced any effort to politicize the issue , and accused her opponent of murder.

Rios was hardly alone in her reckless statements about the Komen controversy. Shorter right wing: when conservatives win grassroots battles of public opinion, it's democracy. When liberals win them, it's totalitarianism.

Poor Jonah Goldberg was also outraged over the Komen results. Writing in USA Today, Goldberg warned that the liberal victory represented an ominous sign of encroaching progressives "imposing their views" on Americans. According to Goldberg, Planned Parenthood defenders should have ignored the far right's relentless campaign to demonize Planned Parenthood and simply accepted Komen's withdrawal quietly. They definitely should not have politicized the foundation's openly political funding cut.

And remember, the whining emanates from a right-wing media mob that relishes in name-calling, character assassination, and casting their political enemies as unspeakable monsters. And yet when liberals push back in public? Quickly the tough-talking bullies whimper about how malicious their opponents are and how menacing "gangsters" is lurking in dark corners.

Strangers no more

Bobbie Cather is religious about her morning power walks in Poland.

She wears a 20-pound walking vest. Each hand grips 6-pound dumbbells. She carves a 3-mile path through the village in the wee hours of the morning before most of Poland has awakened.

And with her is her beloved pit bull, Diamond.

The only sign of life the two typically encounter, Bobbie said, is the car of Phillip Motton, a Vindicator newspaper carrier.

They never talked. But each knew the other’s routine — strangers who weren’t quite strangers.

Two weeks ago, in the pouring rain, she was suddenly left powerless on her power walk.

It’s pouring rain in the morning darkness. He’s a young black guy with many deliveries to make. She’s an older white lady in Poland who’s crying on the ground. Her pit bull is standing over her.

“Not many people are going to do that,” she said. Bobbie admitted she’s not even a subscriber to The Vindy.

Helping wasn’t an issue for Motton.

The pit bull was.

“It was just bravery, I guess,” he said of facing the barking dog. “I overlooked my fear. She was in so much pain, so I just took a chance.”

Diamond was a champ.

Bobbie handed Diamond’s leash to Phillip and he walked the dog down to Bobbie’s house.

He ran back to Bobbie and called her husband and 911. He wrapped Bobbie in a plastic tarp he had in his car to shield the rain.

There’s a light moment at this point:

Phillip said he tied Diamond up to the van in the driveway.

We don’t have a van, said Bobbie.

Phillip was one house off.

When Bobbie’s husband arrived, Phillip ran back down to unstrap the dog from the neighbor’s van.

Within 30 minutes, Phillip was back on his route — the ambulance, police and Bobbie’s husband all taking over the heroics.

But they were strangers no more.

Last Sunday, with pins and plates holding her arm together, Bobbie had Phillip over to her home for a visit. She became more understanding of the size of Phillip’s heart.

In their South Side Youngstown home, Phillip and his mom are raising his two nephews, ages 8 and 9. It was unintended, said Phillip.

Belichick’s staff comes from same mold

Almost every time Bill Belichick hires an assistant coach, the typical reaction is, “Who’s he?”

The New England Patriots’ coaching staff is one of the youngest and smallest in the National Football League. These no-names weren’t even close to making the league as players and by most indicators would have had little chance ever to make it as coaches.

But with everything Belichick does, there is method in his madness.

His objective is to find the “it” factor. When Belichick does, he takes it upon himself to coach that coach to do the job exactly as he wants it done.

“If you bring in guys that maybe haven’t been a lot of places, they don’t have a lot of their own ideas how to do things,” said Brian Ferentz, the Patriots’ tight ends coach. “Not that we’re drones. But we’re not going to come in and say, ‘This way is better.’

“I think that’s a head coach’s prerogative. That’s a very smart way of doing business.”

Ferentz is the youngest member of the Patriots’ staff of 13 that grew to 14 last month when Belichick rehired Josh McDaniels. At 28, the son of Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz has helped develop Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez into the NFL’s finest set of tight ends.

It’s an unlikely match to be sure, Ferentz working as a full-fledged position coach for a Super Bowl team even though he hadn’t coached a day in his life before Belichick brought him on as a “go-fer” in the scouting department four years ago.

At least Ferentz was a starting offensive lineman in the Big Ten for three years at Iowa. On defense, three of the Patriots’ four position coaches played at collegiate levels that their charges probably tease them about.

Matt Patricia, the safeties coach who functions as defensive coordinator, played at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He’s 37.

Patrick Graham, the linebackers coach, had what he called a “terrible” career as a reserve at Yale. He’s 33.

And Josh Boyer, the secondary coach, played at Muskingum College (Ohio). He’s 35.

Still, it’s a decidedly atypical blend. Pepper Johnson, the defensive line coach, is the only assistant with NFL playing experience; by comparison, 10 of Mike McCarthy’s 20 assistants in Green Bay played in the league. If there’s a common denominator, it might be intelligence and East Coast roots. Patricia’s degree from RPI was in aeronautical engineering. Graham was a Yale Merit Scholar. Bill O’Brien is another Ivy Leaguer (Brown). Flores graduated in English and holds a master’s degree in administrative studies. Ferentz is sharp as a tack.

In some cases, Belichick starts them off in scouting for a year or two. In others, he hires them as coaching assistants, entry-level positions referred to as quality control elsewhere.

It’s a brutal environment that not all survive. Having won three Super Bowls in the previous decade, management and the fan base probably are equally demanding.

The fledgling coaches are tested all the time. Some fall by the wayside. It takes thick skin and the willingness to work ungodly hours.

One of the young aides said that for as many times as Belichick barked at him, not once did he then fail to tell him the way he wanted the assignment done.

Some in the NFL will tell you there is no substitute for experience on a coaching staff. But in New England, Belichick tries to substitute for everyone else’s inexperience.

At the same time, Belichick’s hiring practices no doubt inspire intense loyalty within the building.

“Every day I remind myself of who gave me this opportunity,” Ferentz said. “The guy has taken a lot of chances on me. I think maybe some guys here would echo those sentiments.”

As promised in its advance notification last week, Microsoft released seven security bulletins for this month.

Only one has been deemed "critical," with the remaining described as "important." Media players represent easy targets for attackers, according to Marcus Carey, a security researcher at Rapid7.

"This [bulletin] should serve as a reminder that we should expect researchers and attackers to continue to exploit client applications such as media players and browsers," said Carey. "In fact, media players are the target of non-stop fuzzing: the process of throwing the kitchen sink at an application to find where it breaks."

Microsoft's first important item of the month, bulletin MS12-001, is noteworthy for being classified as a "Security Features Bypass." That vulnerability impact designation represents a first for a Microsoft bulletin. New Orleans, the center of the universe when it comes to celebration, fares well because the arts in all forms are completely integrated into the revelry. Galleries and non-profit art organizations carry on with their openings and events in a spirit of inclusiveness with an occasional tweaking of their timing. On the north shore, necessity dictates a different strategy and, on occasion, rescheduling may be the better solution.

Flexibility is easier for venues with a broad focus. IT BEGAN, like so many fine mysteries, with a message to The Sunday Age early last year from an enigmatic stranger suspicious of foul play. In 1996 a sketchbook of watercolours was discovered attributed to a Charles Doudiet. The images in the folio depicted key scenes from the Eureka Rebellion of 1854 at which Doudiet was present. Most importantly, one painting titled Swearing Allegiance to the Southern Cross became the first and only reliable visual depiction of the design of the now-familiar Eureka Flag. That Charles Doudiet existed is beyond question. He is named in Canadian census reports of the time; a ''Charles Doudieb'' appears on the passenger list for the ship Magnolia in 1852; in June of 1853, several personal notices appear in Melbourne's Argus newspaper, in which Doudiet asks for contact from a fellow Canadian. But little else is known.

If, as his sketchbooks suggest, the artist was one of the key players in the events of the Eureka Rebellion - his notes even state that he was one of the four men to carry to safety the body of the mortally wounded Henry Ross, widely considered the flag's designer - then why does he all but vanish from the historical record? Doudiet returned to Canada, apparently, and became a minister. No other artworks have surfaced, and he left no further mention of his involvement in the only armed civil uprising in Australian history.

A 2004 Tribune investigation, "Forensics Under the Microscope," showed that bite-mark evidence had been accepted by courts despite a lack of scientific rigor to justify its broad claims, and that its use in criminal trials had contributed to a number of wrongful convictions.

Bite-mark testimony has fallen out of favor among many prosecutors.

Schneider and Hagstrom filed the lawsuit in Cook County Circuit Court in November. They asked for an unspecified sum in damages.

Schneider and Hagstrom examined evidence for Lake County prosecutors in the case against Bennie Starks, who was convicted in 1986 of pulling a 69-year-old Waukegan woman into a ravine and beating and raping her. Schneider and Hagstrom testified at trial that they compared Starks’ teeth to a bite mark on the woman’s shoulder, and that there was a match.

Starks was convicted and was sentenced to 60 years in prison. He has maintained his innocence.

In 2006, after Starks had served nearly 20 years, the Illinois Appellate Court granted him a new trial because DNA tests excluded him as the source of semen on the victim’s underwear; that evidence, the court said, showed that a crime-lab analyst had presented false evidence at trial.

The appeals court did not rule on the bite-mark evidence. Examinations of Schneider and Hagstrom’s work by two dentists retained by Starks’ attorneys concluded that their work was flawed. Those two dentists said Schneider and Hagstrom mistook the upper jaw for the lower and the lower for the upper.

"The victim was attacked by one person who sexually assaulted her. We know that wasn’t Bennie Starks, so it wasn’t Bennie Starks who bit her," said Jed Stone, one of Starks’ attorneys. "There is no other interpretation of this evidence that makes any sense and isn’t completely fanciful."

Although Starks was awarded a new trial nearly six years ago, Lake County prosecutors still have not retried him.
