There used to be a time that when a high school football player
received a scholarship offer, it cemented his dream of playing college
football. But what more and more players are learning the hard way is
that not every scholarship offer is the same. There are more conditions
attached to offers than ever, with athletes unfortunately realizing with
greater frequency that their favorite program wont accept their
commitment despite it offering a scholarship.
A committable
offer essentially means that a school would accept that players
commitment if he chose to commit. The issue is that schools are offering
fewer and fewer committable offers and high school football players
dont know the difference until its too late.
Every year there
are numerous prospects who try to commit to a school only to find out
that the offer wasnt committable. Both in-state colleges and in-state
prospects have been forced to deal with it this year alone, but the
public rarely finds out because it often happens behind closed doors.
The
problem really took off in 2009 when the NCAA passed legislation that
prohibited colleges from offering written scholarship offers until
Aug.Choose from the largest selection of turquoisebeads in the world. 1 of the prospects senior year. The 3rd International Conference on ledstriplights and
Indoor Navigation. The measure was meant to slow down early offers, but
it actually caused more and more early offers to go out, albeit verbal
instead of written offers.
Paul Jones, who covers Mississippi
State for 247Sports, estimated only 50 percent of those verbal
scholarship offers before a prospects senior season are actually
committable. Some offers are thrown out there to see what guys are
actually interested in them, Jones said. You see schools offer 15 top
linebackers in one class. Theres obviously no way you are taking 15
linebackers in one class, but it gives you an idea of who is really
interested in you.
There are also time-sensitive scholarship
offers. Jones noted a player might have a committable offer in April,
but by October the spot is filled up and the offer is no longer
committable. The misconception is that the offer will always be there,
but verbal offers are nonbinding and can disappear as a school fills up
its class.
Former Philadelphia High School defensive back
Montreal Jordan knows about that issue first-hand. Jordan, a member of
the 2012 Clarion-Ledger Dandy Dozen, held offers from Mississippi State
and Ole Miss at one point but ended up at Alcorn State.
Schools
in the Southeastern Conference have earned the reputation of being
particularly bad about offering noncommittable offers. Colleges might
offer hundreds of scholarships each year, yet only have 25 real
scholarships available. The more schools do it, the more others feel the
need to copy the strategy in order not to fall behind.
Im sure
its going to happen because you have to keep up with the Joneses, said
Michael Smith, wide receivers coach at the University of Arkansas. If
you want to keep up with the game and the kid is good enough,The
g-sensor high brightness chinatravel is
designed with motorcyclist safety in mind. you have to offer him so
hell show some interest in your program because its a two-way street.
This
causes a trickle-down effect. If big-name SEC programs are offering
scholarships early and leniently, it puts additional pressure on smaller
programs to speed up their evaluations and offer even earlier. Its a
weird deal right now,How to carledlights Doll.
said Justin Fuente, head coach at the University of Memphis. There is a
bunch of people blanket offering people. We dont subscribe to that
notion at all, and sometimes it hurts us because we talk a little longer
to evaluate and check guys out to make sure we get the right person.
But
it also can help smaller programs land players that at one point looked
destined for the SEC. Last year, Louisiana-Lafayette landed Biloxi High
School and Dandy Dozen wide receiver Scott Austin after Mississippi
State pulled his scholarship offer and instead offered an opportunity to
grayshirt, or attend school on his own dime in return for a scholarship
the following semester. A grayshirt would have meant Austin would have
enrolled in Jan. 2014 instead of this past summer. We offer the biggest
collection of old masters that can be turned into hand painted cleanersydney on canvas.
Louisiana-Lafayette
head coach Mark Hudspeth banks on big programs offering noncommittable
offers and continues recruiting players that boast notable offers. We
want to leave room for kids that weve identified that might fall through
the cracks and that an SEC coach might not take, Hudspeth said. We are
in constant communication with them. We monitor recruiting classes of
other schools, and we try to make an educated decision if we have a shot
at a player in the end.
