ANFC focuses on traditional healing efforts

In addition to offering one-to-one support, regular cultural activities, and family violence and drug awareness presentations, Aboriginal healing and wellness coordinator Jaret Veran is working to encourage a more traditional, holistic approach to wellbeing at the Atikokan Native Friendship Centre. The programs hes involved with focus on healing C physical, mental, emotional and spiritual C and he welcomes clients of both genders and all ages.

Since taking on the role in September, Veran has established Friday evening Native craft-making sessions the most recent project was dream catchers at the Shelter of Hope and offers both mentoring and craft activities for smaller groups or individual clients at the centre.

Something as simple as learning traditional crafts can be therapeutic: Some just need to keep their mind occupied; [others] have expressed a wish to come and do something because they are trying to quit smoking [and want to keep their minds and hands occupied], he said.Veran and the ANFCs new Aboriginal health outreach worker David Anderson whose program also has an emphasis on family violence prevention are planning to offer mens sharing circles,Get the led fog lamp products information, find oilpaintingreproduction, manufacturers on the hot channel. where the participants can take turns sharing or discussing topics. There are a lot of men that come to the centre and I think that would go over well, said Veran.

Veran and Anderson are also planning a family violence awareness presentation, which encompasses any type of domestic abuse, including elder abuse. He said the two primary issues of concern for his clients are relationship problems and addictions, and Veran and healthy living program worker Shanna Brewster recently held a drug awareness presentation at the youth centre.

At the request of clients at the Shelter of Hope, he is organizing a healing circle program; such talking circles are intended to specifically address or heal an individual or group of people.A sweat lodge is something else Veran hopes to bring here. Used for purification, spiritual renewal, healing and education, the ceremony involves the use of a small covered frame of willows with hot rock placed in the centre, and water thrown on the rocks to create steam.

Veran and some fellow ANFC staff took part in a recent FortFrances sweat lodge, and we were all talking about how nice it would be to have one here. Both healing circles and sweat lodges require an elder to lead; one will have to come from elsewhere in the district as there arent any available here to conduct such ceremonies.Veran is particularly passionate about bringing traditional spiritual healing practices to the Centre.

Creating more awareness in the community about Aboriginal culture, thats my goal. I think I most identify with the spiritual side of Aboriginal culture and how it impacts well being. Most Aboriginal people dont relate to being religious people but as spiritual. We believe in a higher power.Veran, who was born and raised here and started as a kid, grass dancing at Pow Wows, said that his Native heritages traditions have been a part of my life ever since I was a kid.

He was one of 300 Aboriginal dancers who performed during the opening ceremonies Vancouver Olympics, and the regalia he wore which were created by two of his aunts has been donated to the CentennialMuseum for an upcoming Aboriginal exhibit here. Veran is also working with museum staff, and consulting with an elder, to provide input to the creation of the exhibit.Another consistent component of Verans role is simply listening and mentoring clients, and conducting home visits where required.

For someone who may not feel comfortable going for [formal] counselling, they just want someone to talk to, they can come see me and talk. While all ANFC programs are primarily mandated to serve Aboriginal people, he said he will help non-Aboriginal clients if requested.
