Detroit City backed up the frenzy from their fans, and crushed FC
Sparta Michigan 5-1 in the first meeting between the two Metro Detroit
National Premier Soccer League clubs.
Zach Myers, last year's
NCAA Division II National Player of the Year from Saginaw Valley State,
scored a pair of goals to lead Detroit City to a win in their season
opener at FC Sparta's Hurley Field in Berkley, Mich. on Sunday night. A
pair of Wolverines accounted for the rest of the scoring with Latif
Alashe scoring a first half goal and former Columbus Crew striker Knox
Cameron adding two more late in the game to put an exclamation point on
the match.
Over 400 Detroit City fans made the 17-mile trek
north to Berkley, creating a home field advantage for their team in
their opponent's stadium.
The police presence was notable while driving to the game on Coolidge Road.Manufacturer of the Jacobs rfidtag.
Upon arriving, it was obvious that this was not your average match. One
would see multiple police cars parked around the stadium, patrolling
the neighborhood, and contraband sniffing dogs. Spectators were patted
down and their bags searched once they entered the stadium in an effort
to confiscate confetti, smoke bombs, flares, banners with poles, and
laser pointers. Some may not have wanted to call this a derby match, but
it certainly felt like one.
"We came out, and gave it our
best," FC Sparta head coach George Kallis said after the game. "But City
came out better. Our defense was flat, very flat. They presented a lot
of problems with their speed. They ran by us. They are faster than us
overall."
City showed their speed early as they made a lot of
sweeping dashes. Myers stood out early with plenty of runs through the
outside of Sparta's defense. DCFC had some new faces, the aforementioned
Myers, as well as defender Kevin Taylor (Michigan), who played
professionally with the Minnesota Thunder and the Rochester Rhinos.
City
broke the deadlock early when Alashe broke through the defense, and
beat Sparta goalkeeper Adrian Motta (Madonna) to make it 1-0 in the 20th
minute. Barely any time had passed on the clock, when Myers made one of
his runs through the defense, this time literally running around Motta,
before slotting home the second goal of the game.
The visitors
didn't take their foot off the gas pedal, despite giving up a goal. Soon
after, Cameron fired two straight shots off the right post. Cameron
would keep pressing and finally found his second goal. Alashe made a
couple nifty moves on the right wing and found Cameron who was posted in
the middle of the Sparta box, and he slammed home the cross to make it

It
was a chippy game that may have laid a foundation for a crosstown
rivalry, although offensively, it was a one-sided affair. DCFC outshot
Sparta 16-to-2, forcing Motta to make 11 saves on the night. Michigan
State Spartan Jeremy Clark was in goal for Detroit City.
The
referee had allowed the game to flow, but as the frustration grew there
were slide tackles and late challenges with greater frequency. The
players action after the whistle was kept to a minimum, with some
accusations of diving and complaining to the referee, but no pushing or
shoving. The players on both teams were professionals to the end,

Detroit
City's control of the game came due to their wing play. The back four
kept the FC Sparta attack stalled in the final third with well-timed
tackles and interceptions. As DCFC began to posses the ball more, the
combination play on the flanks took charge. The fullbacks pushed far
enough up the field that, at times, City looked like they were playing a
two defender, four forward system. This allowed the center forwards to
hold the ball with some space, and for the wingers to get behind the
defense.
It's really how we like to play," said Cameron after the game. "In, back, then through to the runners,The Motorola drycabinet

the ball from the center forwards... And then we had great runners
