'Ghost' scam targets Chinese seniors

An immigration hearing for a Chinese national allegedly involved in a so-called blessing scam that has targeted Chinese seniors in Vancouver wont take place until next month. 

Youjun Huo and four women Xiao Qiong Lin, Shao Quiong Luo, Jianmei Wu and Ya Jian Yang were detained at Vancouver airport on July 15. The five were attempting to leave for Hong Kong when officers with the Canada Border Services Agency found they were carrying $148,000 worth of cash among them, as well as a large amount of jewelry concealed between the pages of magazines, in the lining of suitcases and inserted inside feminine hygiene products. 

On Wednesday, Huo appeared at an immigration hearing to determine whether he is inadmissible to Canada because of his alleged involvement in organized crime. The women detained with him are facing a separate immigration hearing.Dressed in an orange prison jumpsuit, Huo, who appeared via video conference from the Fraser Regional Correctional Centre, hid his face by resting his head on a table as reporters and photographers attempted to take his photo. 

Earlier this month, Vancouver police appealed for victims of the long-running scam they have been investigating since June 2012. The department said it was aware of 13 reported cases in Vancouver.Often referred to as the ghost scam or blessing scam, the elaborate con game often starts with a group of three or four Asian women who speak Cantonese approaching an elderly Chinese woman on the street, according to police. 

The suspects tell their victims they are being followed by a ghost and that one of their children will die unless their money and jewelry is blessed immediately, police said. They then convince their victims that for $20,000 in cash and jewelry, they will sell them a lucky jade bracelet or a bottle containing blessed mystical water that will remove the bad luck. 

Once the victims hand over their cash and jewelry, the scammers perform a short blessing ritual, during which they steal the goods and replace them with worthless items, according to police. The victims are then told to not check the bag for a period of time and not to tell their family about it, otherwise the blessing will not work.During a July 18 detainment hearing, ministers counsel Marin Debruyn said there is a significant amount of evidence tying the five suspects to similar scams in Calgary and Toronto. 

A gold necklace chain and a gold desk clock were found in the seized luggage that was identified as belonging to a victim in Calgary, according to a transcript of the hearing. Conniff, who lived in Shelburne Falls for 27 years but now lives in Greenfield, said that the first store, at the same location on Bridge Street, was much simpler than the current one. Founding member Julie Hall Roth, a painter from Heath, agrees. 

We started with mostly apple crates covered with material, Roth said. We had a wooden jewelry display. 

In those early days, Roth thought the store might last six months. It was kind of rustic and yet we made it work. We really made it work! 

Roths assessment is no understatement: the cooperative is about to celebrate its 15th year in business this August no small accomplishment during hard economic times that have forced other galleries in the area out of business. 

Financially, our heads are above water, said current president Cheryl Denton, a fused-glass and stained-glass artist who lives in Shelburne Falls. She and others attribute the business success to its cooperative model. Because co-op members share the work as part of their member requirement, there are no salaries to pay, except to one bookkeeper. The Mammogram Assault

Last week I felt assaulted: not on the street, nor in a dark parking structure, alley or another risky location. Instead, this feeling of having been assaulted happened to me in a hospital.
It happened during a routine screening mammogram.When I was 32 years old, after more than a year of misdiagnoses, a different doctor than the first ordered a mammogram that saved my life. Today, I'm a veteran of mammograms. I receive them annually. And I will have one again next year. I believe that women should not hesitate to have their first screening mammograms, and then regular ones thereafter as recommended by reputable guidelines and in consultation with their doctors about their level of risk.

Her face was ashen, her eyes red. She went into the changing room, closed the colorful, flowery curtain (chosen, no doubt, to make us all feel better), and then cried softly.

As I thought about whether I should interrupt this woman and try to talk with her some more, the technician called me for my mammogram. I waited a moment; my waiting room companion's crying had subsided. "Maybe it isn't my business," I thought, But surely it was someone's.

The technician didn't walk with me, as several others had done in years past, smiling and endeavoring to relax me. No, she was gone, and I wandered the hallway to find the right room. There was no time for small talk, just a few questions about my history and then we got started - my birthdate, doctor's name and my own. Missing was a gentle touch on my shoulder as some technicians had ventured in previous years. Absent was any assurance that "This won't take long" or "Tell me right away if this hurts too much."

While I like efficiency when having my car serviced or ordering lunch on a short break, I decided this technician could use some guidance. "There's a lot of scarring on my right side from radical radiation, so you'll want to move slowly," I said. She may have nodded, but nothing was said.

She placed my arm across the machine then grabbed my right (radiated) breast, poked, stretched, squeezed and pressed without hesitation. The clear acrylic pressure plate descended, without hesitation, until pain tore through my breast and into my shoulder. Then down a bit more. "If so," I thought, "another technician will have to do it this time." But I was dismissed - one of the lucky ones. Tears welled in my eyes for the first time in years. Maybe they were for me, but I suspect for the woman before me too.Now, I'm a big believer that a little discomfort (even a lot sometimes) is better than a poorly performed medical test. For many women, mammography is not very painful. Yet, there is nothing about the test itself that makes consideration and competence mutually exclusive.

Mammography, as is common with MRIs, should be done with compassion. "Would you like to rest between views?" and "We have one more to do. How are you feeling?" are the kinds of questions mammography patients need to hear.Imagine if you will that, without warning or tenderness, someone grabs, stretches, pushes and squeezes a man's testicles between two plates for a medical test. Obviously, the very thought is appalling. It would be inhumane. And so is any such treatment with mammogram patients.

The next time you go for a mammogram (or go with someone you love), observe the behavior at the reception desk and the body language of the technician. Is everyone just trying to get to lunch hour or beat the traffic? How is emotional expression dealt with in the waiting room? Weatherby Vanguard S2 Back Country Review

When it comes to hunting, Im a wilderness addict. There are those who will argue that at 6 pounds, 12 ounces the Back Country is not a true lightweight, and they are correct. There are production bolt-action hunting rifles (Kimber) and custom rifles (Rifles Inc., Ultra Light Arms, MGA, and others) that weigh in at less than 5 pounds. But Ill contend that for the average guy, and even the expert rifleman, a 6-plus-pound rifle is much easier to shoot accurately under field conditions. The Weatherby Back Country bridges the gap between too light for best accuracy and too heavy to carry.

Clearly, a good deal of thought went into the design of the Back Country. (Properly, its a redesign, since in years past the Vanguard line included a model dubbed the Back Country.) The nicely contoured barrel is fluted to reduce weight, but most of the savings in ounces comes in the stock. Its an excellent Bell and Carlson (a company that specializes in fiberglass, Aramid, and graphite), but rather than going with the popularand heavyfull-length aluminum bedding block, the designers opted to use the much lighter all-composite stock and pillar bed the action.

A full-length aluminum bedding block is an excellent way to provide a rigid, strong stock with a reasonably successful drop-in fit. However, machining tolerances can vary, both in actions and in bedding blocks, and riflemen and gunsmiths serious about accuracy contend that even a bedding block must be skim bedded to achieve the best consistency. A pitfall that occasionally accompanies bedding blocks is misalignment; a block can be built into a stock a fraction of a degree off, and as a result, when an action is bolted into it, the barrel runs off center at the tip of the fore-end. Its only fair to add that this fault is rare, and when it occurs, stock companies are usually very good about sending a replacement.

Its also textured prior to painting to give it a pebbled or orange-peel surface that aids gripping and positive handling. It has the classic Weatherby high comb and rakish angle on the fore-end tip, and the butt is fitted with Pachmayrs outstanding Decelerator recoil pad.

The barrel and action are chrome-moly steel, finished in Tactical Gray Cerakote. Im a fan of Cerakote. Its an incredibly durable corrosion- and friction-resistant, ceramic-based finish that wont flake around the muzzle crown or scratch like most Teflon-based finishes do. Its applied to the Back Country with a nice nonglare satin surface. The Cerakote protects the exterior of the metal parts from weather and abuse, but not the bore, as it has a rather detrimental effect on accuracy if applied there. Here, I have one of my only two quibbles about the Back Country: Id prefer to see at least the barrel made of stainless steel. While cosmetic protection to the exterior is nice, the bore is where the soul of a rifle lives, and stainless steel stands up to the rigors of wilderness use better than chrome-moly. I think savvy wilderness hunters would have cheerfully paid the extra dollars for stainless.

The mechanics of the action are unchanged from the standard Vanguard S2. The bolt is a two-lug design with a Sako-style extractor and spring-loaded plunger ejector, perforated by three gas-venting holes to direct hot propellant gases away from the shooters face if a cartridge were to rupture. The bolt release is a stamped but very functional part, located at the left rear of the action, and is activated by depressing it. The safety is a three-position lever located at the right rear of the actionforward to fire, rearward to engage the safety and lock the bolt, and the center position to engage the safety while leaving the bolt unlocked.

The bottom metal is sleek and classic. A hinged, low-profile floorplate lies snug to the stock and is released by a button-like lever located in the front of the well-contoured trigger guard. Inside the magazine box is the only plastic piece I could find on the rifle: the follower. Its constructed of naturally lubricious, high-impact polymer, and while I prefer no plastic in a bolt action, it will no doubt give decades of trouble-free service.
The action screws employ large Torx heads, which are less susceptible to damage than traditional flat-head slots. Those on my rifle came from the factory torqued to 40 inch-pounds.

The S2 trigger is a two-stage design, adjustable down to 2.5 pounds. Each trigger is handhoned and tuned at the factory. If I understand correctly, using a two-stage design allows Weatherby to provide a lawyer-approved, incredibly safe trigger with a pull like that of a high-dollar aftermarket match trigger without a safety-enhancing lever imbedded within the trigger itself. My .240 Weatherby rifle came with the trigger factory-set at 3 pounds, 3 ounces, with only 3 ounces of variation over a series of 10 pull measurements with a Lyman digital trigger gauge.

Excellent design and good looks are worth nothing if a rifle doesnt handle well and perform reliably and accurately. Not to worry. The Back Country feels great in the hands and comes to the shoulder naturally, courtesy of the classic design features pioneered by Roy Weatherby over a half-century ago. The stock is slender enough at the balance point to carry comfortably in the hand, the action runs smoothly with the rifle held at the shoulder, and the high comb does a reasonably good job of lining the shooters eye up with the crosshairs.

I mounted a lovely compact 3-9X 32mm Leupold riflescope in lightweight one-piece aluminum mounts (made for Weatherby by Talley), bringing overall rifle weight to around 7.5 pounds. The first factory load I tried featured a 100-grain Nosler Partition, and the very first string out of the rifle grouped under an inch, as did the next string with the 85-grain Barnes TSX.Here's a complete list of granitecountertops for the beginning oil painter. Later, I returned to the range for formal accuracy testing with those loads and a handload. The excellent results are listed in the accompanying chart.

The Vanguard S2 Back Country retails at $1,399. Though the price at your local gunshop will likely be lower, thats still a significant chunk of change to shell out for a rifle. Is it worth it?

I think it is. It offers a well-built, well-finished barreled action thats properly mounted into a strong stock that is impervious to the elements. Every Back Country is guaranteed to shoot 0.99 MOA or better. I think the rifle has just enough weight to be stable in field positions, and the outstanding trigger makes it easy to shoot well. Whether you opt for a capable but common caliber, such as the .270 Win., or a sizzling Weatherby Magnum, I think the Vanguard S2 Back Country will give a lifetime of reliable, accurate service.

Neighbors identify bank robbery suspect

State police said vigilant neighbors identified the man they believe robbed a bank in Hickory Township Monday.Troopers yesterday arrested Norman Clifford Lowe, 57, of Eastbrook Apartments after searching his car and living quarters with a warrant Tuesday evening.Choose from the largest selection of turquoisebeads in the world. Lowe is accused of entering First National Banks Laurel Branch on Harlansburg Road just before 11:30 a.m. and approaching a teller.
