But
today’s skillets aren’t necessarily the same as your grandmother’s.
While you can find antique cookware — and there is a growing market for
it — new cast iron is increasingly accessible, both to find (you no
longer have to go to a hardware store or camping outlet to buy it) and
to use straight off the shelf.

Why
is cast iron so big? Well, it easily lends itself to almost any kind of
cooking. Cast iron heats evenly, without hot spots, and retains that
heat better and longer than other types of cookware. Properly cared for,

Cast
iron is made by pouring the molten metal into individual sand molds.
Once the cookware is cast, it needs to be “seasoned.” Because iron
corrodes so easily, a fat — oil, lard or grease — is used to build a
protective layer. Properly applied and heated, the oil hardens over time
(polymerizes) to form a dense, slick layer on the surface of the iron.

“People
are tired of Teflon and all that other stuff,” says David G. Smith. An
avid collector and dealer of antique cast iron, he’s known as “the Pan
Man” and is coauthor of two bibles on collectible cast iron.
He’s
noticed a major resurgence in cast iron, particularly antique and other
collectible types — old cookware from manufacturers such as Griswold,
Wagner and Lodge. He asserts that antique cast iron was first sought
after mostly by collectors: Many manufacturers varied the style and logo
on pieces over time, making certain hard-to-find pieces and years
highly valued — and expensive. Smith related a story about a bread pan
that sold at a local auction house a couple of years ago for $87 and
later went for more than $25,000 to a high-end collector.
Not
all old cast iron is so expensive. According to Doris Mosier, who has
been collecting and dealing in antique cast iron for more than 30 years,
most of her new customers buy three things: a skillet, griddle and
Dutch oven. Prices will vary depending on the style, age and quality of
the piece. Mosier says a basic skillet will set you back about $50, a
basic griddle $45 to $50, and a Dutch oven $85 and up, depending on the
size.
Mosier and her husband, Bob, run the Griswold Cookware
website, named after a particularly popular antique brand. She’s noticed
the uptick too. Most of her customers are not hard-core collectors but
those new to cast iron. Many are from outside the U.S. Antique cast iron
claims only a sliver of total sales, but some connoisseurs believe that
it’s superior to much of the cookware on the market today.
The
difference is in the manufacturing process. Composition and quality of
the iron can vary by manufacturer. And because the cookware is cast in
sand molds, the pieces naturally have a slightly grainy surface. In the
past, many manufacturers, including Lodge, would grind and polish each
piece after it was cast, removing the top layer of iron, making for a

glass pieces. The L.G. Wright Co. of New Martinsville, W.Va., opened in
1937 and soon ordered and sold lamps made by Fenton and other
glasshouses. L.G. Wright also bought old glass molds from several
companies.
Today there often is confusion about who made a
particular piece, about whether the piece is a copy made from an old
mold and about the piece's age. Collectors search for Fenton pieces sold
by Fenton, and for Fenton pieces made for and sold by L.G. Wright. The
Fenton Art Glass Collectors of America is an active club still

Air Canada operates a fleet of GE engines in its aircraft. In 2011, commercial jet airplanes from Air Canada and other airlines were in the air for about 50 million hours, translating into a $60 billion annual maintenance bill. Engine maintenance alone accounts for $25 billion of that. With an industrial Internet tracking engine parts and communicating back to its manufacturer, GE figures that airlines will reduce commercial jet engine maintenance costs by $250 million for every 1% improvement in engine maintenance efficiency.

Also back this year is the Zombies mode. There are now three different types of games you can play. Survival is the basic mode of play that players have come to expect, Grief puts two teams of four players on the field where they can work together to take out the undead but eventually are forced to turn on each other, and Tranzit has players working to move from location to location via vehicles. I could keep going, but I need to start talking about the rest of the game. Suffice it to say that this is the most fully featured COD yet, and it has the best campaign mode in franchise history. There is a lot to see and do here, and it’s all good.
Musically, the game is a hit. There is a large variety of tunes, covering more electronic songs for the future levels, classic orchestral sounds for big battles, fun songs for radios that you pass during levels, etc. The music is implemented exceptionally as well. For example, one scene in the past has you rescuing someone as the victory music from the first game starts to play. Then, someone gets shot and it all goes to hell. That sense of victory is quickly deflated as the music comes to a screeching halt. League play is a new feature where you’re ranked and put into a division based on your wins. This mode is outside regular online, and allows you to access all of the weapons/perks from the start. You can earn some experience for your online profile here as well. Combat training is back as well, though it has been changed up. You play against players and bots, with your kills/deaths not counting towards your combat record. You earn experience to unlock new gear, but at a much slower rate. You can also use the new “codcasting” feature to broadcast and commentate on an online game.
The basics are all here. There are several modes, including team deathmatch, free-for-all, headquarters, and others. Kill confirmed from MW3 makes an appearance, and the new hardpoint mode is chaotically good fun. The wager games from Black Ops are back, but work differently. You don’t earn money in this game, so there’s nothing to bet on. Instead, the games are there for fun. The top three performers do earn some experience for their profile though. You can also create and participate in custom games, which allow for all sorts of rule manipulation and shenanigans.
Also back this year is the Zombies mode. There are now three different types of games you can play. Survival is the basic mode of play that players have come to expect, Grief puts two teams of four players on the field where they can work together to take out the undead but eventually are forced to turn on each other, and Tranzit has players working to move from location to location via vehicles. It’s much more involved and includes leaderboards and rankings.
I could keep going, but I need to start talking about the rest of the game. Suffice it to say that this is the most fully featured COD yet, and it has the best campaign mode in franchise history. There is a lot to see and do here, and it’s all good.
Musically, the game is a hit. There is a large variety of tunes, covering more electronic songs for the future levels, classic orchestral sounds for big battles, fun songs for radios that you pass during levels, etc. The music is implemented exceptionally as well. For example, one scene in the past has you rescuing someone as the victory music from the first game starts to play. Then, someone gets shot and it all goes to hell. That sense of victory is quickly deflated as the music comes to a screeching halt. During prolonged gun fights, turning the corner only to hear nothing but smooth Latin beats from a radio is a surreal and amusing experience.

Civil society & industry oppose India’s plans to modify ITRs
India’s proposal on International Telecommunications Regulations
(ITRs), submitted last month to the International Telecommunications
Union (ITU), the U.N. agency responsible for information and
communication technologies, has drawn opposition from, and fears of
content control among, civil society and the industry alike.
Sunil Abraham, Executive Director, Centre for Internet Society, told The Hindu: “The Indian government’s position on the ITRs can be improved, particularly with regard to the proposed definitions, approach to cyber security, scope of regulation.” However, he said, “we are confident that the Indian position will protect consumer and citizen interest once the government implements changes based on inputs from all… stakeholders.”
The National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM), which represents the $100-billion IT and BPO industry, has strong views against the Internet governance model of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Numbers and Names (ICANN), but favours self-regulation. Its president Som Mittal says: “NASSCOM does not favour oversight by an existing U.N. organisation like ITU. Internet and infrastructure have to be in the hands of expert organisations with proven experience.” NASSCOM has also expressed discomfort with the inclusion of “ICTs along with processing” in Section 21E of India’s proposal, since this would subject IT and BPO industries to inter-governmental regulation through the ITRs.
The Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), which represents India’s largest mobile operators with nearly 700 million subscribers, has also opposed any role for ITU in the areas of international roaming and Internet governance, fearing a direct impact on domestic network architecture, costs and technology choices. COAI director-general Rajan Mathews said: “We are already regulated by the Department of Telecom (DoT) and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). Placing the ITU’s jurisdiction over us — where we neither have voice nor recourse — is unacceptable.” The COAI’s position is consistent with the GSM Association (GSMA), the world’s largest association of mobile companies representing 800 operators spanning 220 countries. The COAI further alleges that most of its inputs “have been rejected without reasons assigned or even a meeting.” It has lodged a protest with the DoT.
The Internet Service Providers Association of India (ISPAI) has similarly protested against ITU’s jurisdiction over issues of Internet governance, architecture and cost.
Subho Ray, president, Internet & Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), said: “We represent a vast majority of Internet companies but have not been consulted by the DoT. We are completely opposed to ITU’s jurisdiction in any area related to Internet policy.”
The FICCI has also given detailed inputs on the dangers of allowing ITU’s jurisdiction, especially in areas of Internet policy and governance. It supports a bottom-up consultative and consensus-led multi-stakeholder approach, similar to the one propounded by Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal at the Internet Governance Forum, the world’s largest multi-stakeholder conference, held in Baku.
Several prominent civil society groups and members of academia involved in Internet governance also have apprehensions about expanding the ITU’s reach to Internet regulation through the ITRs. In a November 15, 2012 letter to Telecom Secretary R. Chandrashekhar, Society for Knowledge Commons, Internet Democracy Project, Free Software Movement of India, Delhi Science Forum, Media for Change and Software Freedom Law Center have complained about not having been consulted, while warning that India’s proposal “could have far reaching implications for the Internet.”
On the issue of cyber security, industry associations and several civil society groups are unanimously against any role for ITU, pointing out that including ill-defined terms such as ‘spam’ and ‘network fraud’ in a binding treaty is a terrible idea. It is equally clear that the existing Internet governance system is unacceptable to most countries, and therefore a more evolved democratic and internationally equitable system, which is managed through a multi-stakeholder process and yet with a definite role for countries like India, appears the only way forward.

Novi invests nearly $7 million in infrastructure
Novi pumped nearly $7 million into infrastructure improvements this year, which is up from a low of $4 million in 2008.

The parking lots at Power Park and Novi Ice Arena have been resurfaced and one of the police departments lots is being touched up.
The sanitary sewer system project involves areas of concern throughout the system. Hayes said Novi has a younger system that is not connected with the storm water pipes, which makes it an ideal system overall. However, he said there are sections that have groundwater seeping in through cracks.
“These sections need to be isolated and tightened up,” he said.
His department will locate the exact spots of concern and then do the necessary repairs, like inserting a sleeve, to stop the groundwater.
In 2013, Novi will plan and undertake some big road projects, including establishing a priority list of roads to be reworked through the road millage and some general road work maintenance.

The sanitary sewer system project involves areas of concern throughout the system. Hayes said Novi has a younger system that is not connected with the storm water pipes, which makes it an ideal system overall. However, he said there are sections that have groundwater seeping in through cracks.
“These sections need to be isolated and tightened up,” he said.
His department will locate the exact spots of concern and then do the necessary repairs, like inserting a sleeve, to stop the groundwater.
In 2013, Novi will plan and undertake some big road projects, including establishing a priority list of roads to be reworked through the road millage and some general road work maintenance.

Designing outside the box
While studies at the Academy of Design in Toronto gave
Melissa Condotta the foundation for her design business, it was correspondence
courses taken through England’s Rhodec International that provided its unique
twist.
Studying online and sending in class projects via email gave Condotta the idea that she might be able to provide the same thing for her clients.
“If I could give them a comprehensive package, a blueprint, for how their home would look, it would allow them to follow through at their own pace,” she says. “And it would dramatically reduce costs because they wouldn’t have to pay me travel time to source at shops. They could do it themselves, or I could give them a list of online sourcing.”
Once everything has been pulled together into a storyboard, Condotta emails it in PDF format to the homeowners. She also provides Option A and Option B so the clients can choose which will work best in their specific circumstances. For example, if they like to hold dinner parties for eight or more people, but there’s no dining room, she might provide a storyboard with a coffee table that can adjust to table height along with folding chairs that can be kept in the storage locker. Or she might suggest purchasing a large coffee table — or ottoman with trays — that would work well for serving a tapas meal and drinks.
For someone who’s got a shoe or clothing fetish — and who doesn’t? — and has a tiny bedroom, Condotta suggests redesigning the closet with custom closet organizers. It’s something she often does for clients, and it doubles or triples the functional space.
One thing she recommends before buying is to try and walk yourself through the floor plan to see if it will work.
And keep an open mind when it comes to bargain shopping. When Condotta was a student, she often “shopped” in the garbage. “People would throw perfectly good stuff out. All the piece might need was a hinge, or to be repainted, or a few knobs added — and Anthropologie has incredible hardware that works great on old furniture. You can save so much money, and older pieces are usually built better. Some are even iconic.”
Another money-saving tip is to shop at the homes of from relatives — she has a large credenza that her grandfather got when he first came to Canada. She painted it white and keeps her collections in it.

Bingo's legacy of helping will live on
The dog whose bark helped save a boy
numerous times and was heard around the world may be gone, but thanks to her
young master she'll never be forgotten.
Cesar Millan, the famed Dog Whisperer, said just before his show at the MTS Centre Sunday he was so touched by 11-year-old Cole Hein's love for his dog Bingo -- and by the lick-it list the boy came up with to help his dying dog in her last days -- he wanted to meet him and help him.
"I'm absolutely blown away by your story and by your thoughtfulness," Millan said as met Cole and his family, twin brother Eric and parents Mandi and Dwayne.
"What I tell people is to be there for the pack. Your behaviour shows it... I don't know what inspired you to do it, but I'm glad you did.
"You created a beautiful movement. You managed to make the world come to you -- that's leadership.
"And you did it at 11."
Millan said Cole's story touched him so much he wanted to have his charitable organization,We specialize in howo concrete mixer, the Cesar Millan Foundation, create the Bingo Hein Legacy Fund.
Jillian Dunn, the foundation's executive director, said the fund will help dogs in future by giving them a place to run in an outdoor dog park at a shelter.
Dunn said once the funds are raised, they hope to build several of the dog parks.
"Being outside is a better environment than a cage," she said.
"Adopters can also come and see the dog playing outside. And, if it is a dog's last day, they can at least spend that day outside.
"This is the same idea as Cole's lick-it list."
Cole told Millan his idea for the lick-it list "just popped out of my mind. I was just expecting to complete a few things. I didn't expect to complete all of them."
Bingo was a Jack Russell terrier trained to bark to alert caregivers to resuscitate Cole whenever the child stopped breathing and gave a distinctive gagging noise.

Cesar Millan, the famed Dog Whisperer, said just before his show at the MTS Centre Sunday he was so touched by 11-year-old Cole Hein's love for his dog Bingo -- and by the lick-it list the boy came up with to help his dying dog in her last days -- he wanted to meet him and help him.
"I'm absolutely blown away by your story and by your thoughtfulness," Millan said as met Cole and his family, twin brother Eric and parents Mandi and Dwayne.
"What I tell people is to be there for the pack. Your behaviour shows it... I don't know what inspired you to do it, but I'm glad you did.
"You created a beautiful movement. You managed to make the world come to you -- that's leadership.
"And you did it at 11."
Millan said Cole's story touched him so much he wanted to have his charitable organization,We specialize in howo concrete mixer, the Cesar Millan Foundation, create the Bingo Hein Legacy Fund.
Jillian Dunn, the foundation's executive director, said the fund will help dogs in future by giving them a place to run in an outdoor dog park at a shelter.
Dunn said once the funds are raised, they hope to build several of the dog parks.
"Being outside is a better environment than a cage," she said.
"Adopters can also come and see the dog playing outside. And, if it is a dog's last day, they can at least spend that day outside.
"This is the same idea as Cole's lick-it list."
Cole told Millan his idea for the lick-it list "just popped out of my mind. I was just expecting to complete a few things. I didn't expect to complete all of them."
Bingo was a Jack Russell terrier trained to bark to alert caregivers to resuscitate Cole whenever the child stopped breathing and gave a distinctive gagging noise.

The dog saved Cole's life numerous times, but in September she had to be euthanized a few weeks after being diagnosed with canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome.

After the Free Press published a story about Cole's idea, the story went viral and was featured in publications on and websites around the world, including being mentioned by Today show hosts Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb.
And the treats poured in from around the world, with hundreds of packages arriving at the post office in Shilo, where the family lives.
Millan said he was touched when the family gave him two special gifts: an original copy of Cole's lick-it list and a fridge magnet with a photo of Cole and Bingo.
"To me, this is like getting the Constitution," Millan said of the list. As for the magnet, "My mom collects magnets so I will give it to her and I will tell her the story and she will cry."

Port cities hope to prosper off ocean again
For centuries, the ocean provided a linchpin for New England’s
economy, from fishing grounds that brought the first Europeans, to
whaling that made New Bedford the nation’s richest city, to merchant
ships that built New England’s first great fortunes.
Now the region is reinventing its maritime industry again, turning to the sea not for fish or whales or trade, but energy. From the Bay of Fundy to Long Island Sound, new technologies are harnessing the power of ocean tides and winds, promising not only an inexhaustible source of energy, but also hundreds of jobs, billions in revenues, and new life for struggling fishing communities along New England’s 473-mile coastline.
This future is still far off, but the first steps toward it are underway. Since September, an underwater generator built by a Maine company has used the powerful tides of Cobscook Bay near the Canadian border to make electricity distributed by local utilities. In New Bedford, where unemployment is near 12 percent, officials are waiting for a permit from the federal Environmental Protection Agency to expand the seaport to become a staging area for Cape Wind’s construction.
Rhode Island port officials hope to develop another staging area in North Kingstown.
In Gloucester, home of Gorton’s, the company that helped make fish sticks a meal-time staple, Mayor Carolyn Kirk said ocean energy could help revive a maritime industry that has been hard hit by federal fishing restrictions and other regulations aimed at rebuilding depleted fish stocks.
Kirk said the sea still remains Gloucester’s best resource. In recent years the city has held summits on revitalizing the harbor, creating a maritime development fund, and attracting funding for an ocean research lab.

The building houses Marynell’s Craft Attack, which offers crafting classes in pottery, drawing and painting, fabric painting, jewelry making and more, as well as parties and rentals.
“We’re really just five retired ladies who got together, who still want to learn and create,” owner Marynell Kaufman said.Klaus Multiparking is an industry leader in innovative parking system technology. “Each of us had a specialty and we decided to share our knowledge with everyone else.”
She and Carolyn Wimp, Ginger Smith, Merrily Prescott and Merla Pittman all met at the Denton Senior Center while Kaufman taught classes.
Kaufman has volunteered at the Senior Center for 17 years. She’s also taught summer camps, home-school classes at Martin Luther King Jr. Recreation Center and classes at Briarwood Retreat Center.
She said teaching classes and collecting the needed supplies like molds and paints overwhelmed her.
“I told my seniors where I was. I told them, ‘I am 65, I could stop and throw everything away or open my own studio,’” she said. “In three days, I went from drowning in stuff to opening my own business.”
Before choosing her location, Kaufman said she had driven by the “old house” for about a year before inquiring about it. She learned it had been a business and the owner wanted to rent the 2,400-square-foot space to someone else.
Kaufman, a grandmother of eight, said she finances all the needed items for her business and her friends volunteer by teaching their classes. She said she’s thankful for her husband, who helped finance the project.
“The business does not have employees, and they are all here to support me,Our technology gives rtls systems developers the ability.” Kaufman said.
Since Craft Attack opened Sept. 1, the group has managed to work out a schedule that fits everyone. In the house’s kitchen, also called the “whatever room,” a wall calendar lists the classes and times.

Smith, who teaches stained-glass classes, said the instructors at Marynell’s Craft Attack are really good artists.

“I’m at a point in my life when I want to have some fun. She is one of the most giving artists I’ve ever seen,” Smith said of Kaufman. “I used to be a full-time jeweler years ago, and I found that the more secure an artist is, the more they are willing to share. And that is one of the ways you can tell someone who wants to be an artist from someone who is an artist.”
In addition to having people who volunteer and share their craft, Kaufman also helps her students create businesses.

There will be sections of this book that will absolutely startle you and force you to want to re-read for clarification and for impact. I think this makes the novel all the more distinctive. This is truly a work you have never read before.

We won’t decertify
The option of decertifying as a union was presented to the players in
at least a quasi-formal fashion for the first time on Wednesday during a
conference call that was open to the full membership of the NHLPA, Slap
Shots has learned.
We’re told Don and Steve Fehr outlined three options for the players in the face of the NHL’s ongoing militancy as follows, and in no particular order: 1) Decertification; 2) Capitulation; 3) Continued negotiations in an attempt to end the owners’ lockout.
Sources report that few players expressed interest in opening Doors 1 or 2. Indeed, according to one trustworthy individual who attended the negotiating session in New York on Nov. 9, Calgary owner Murray Edwards was at one point silenced by Bettman just a moment after Jacobs leaned over and whispered into the commissioner’s ear.
It is unfathomable that league owners who understand the ramifications of extending this senseless lockout have not demanded Bettman call a Board of Governors meeting for a full airing of the issues.

The difference is all but impossible to accurately gauge given the apples-to-oranges nature of such a comparison and the spin-doctoring that accompanies every exchange — league documents released on Friday, for example, account for a truncated season in the revenue column but a full season in the “make-whole” expense column — but let’s say it’s that much.Installers and distributors of solar panel,
That $150 million becomes $5 million per team. And that is actually nothing. There is no doubt there are a significant number of players waiting for the league to make an offer they can accept. But the league continues to make offers the players cannot in good faith even consider.
The owners’ system demands are word-for-word what they were in the league’s opening July 13 proposal that established the tone of this debate.
If that’s the league’s definition of bargaining, they must be handing out unique law dictionaries over at Proskauer Rose.
If the league insists on going to 50/50 immediately as a requirement for unlocking the doors, that should be part of a system featuring a transition period through 2014-15 in which clubs would be permitted to exceed the cap by paying a luxury tax.
The revenue from luxury taxes — say teams could exceed the cap by up 12.3 percent in 2013-14 and up to, say, 7.5 percent in 2014-15 — would go into revenue-sharing and be distributed under league mandate.

Craven District Council’s select committee was told by its parking manager Shane Reffin that people were trying to avoid paying for an all-day ￡8 ticket.

What began nearly 70 years ago as an overseas pen pal relationship

She began writing “Tomorrow, My Son,” her first published work, about four years ago, which she said was a lifelong and very personal feat.
The story began for Lighthall when she was a teenager in the 1940s in Northern Indiana. Her junior high school teacher encouraged the class to send care packages with warm clothing to European refugees at the end of the war. Lighthall sent a pair of her father’s galoshes, and she later received a thank-you note from a German professor who had received the footwear and found an address inside.
“He was so grateful,” Lighthall remembered. “He said he had large feet and often things didn’t fit him.”
The professor mentioned he had a son, and Lighthall’s family also sent clothing for the little boy, Manfred, who was a few years younger than Lighthall.
“His wife also wrote to thank us, and my mother thought, ‘Well, she needs some clothing,’ so we sent women’s clothing too,” said Lighthall.
Correspondence between the families continued, mainly between Lighthall and Manfred, and the German father also kept a journal to send Lighthall, which detailed everything the family and other German residents experienced while being pushed out of their homes in East Germany by the Russians.
Not only did those German residents face possible repercussions for their beliefs — no matter what side they were on — but they were victims of looting, violence and starvation, Lighthall said.
During that time, these European refugees knew that the Jews had moved out of town and their stores had closed, however, they didn’t know what was going on, Lighthall said, and they especially were not aware of the Holocaust or concentration camps.
“The family was against Hitler, but they couldn’t say a word in public,” she said. “They could have been shot just for listening to any of the propaganda.”
Lighthall said the professor wrote in his manuscript that in one day he had to help bury 300 people found dead on the road. The forces used him to help identify bodies of fellow citizens.
During her college years at Ball State, Lighthall started taking German classes so she could someday translate the detailed 80-page manuscript. Lighthall said it was like a trance getting into the character, and she additionally emerged herself in German history and culture to provide accurate details. By the time Lighthall started writing, however, the mother had passed away, so some unknown parts of her life had to be created as fiction.

Friday is part of the plaintiffs class in what some say is the longest-running housing discrimination lawsuit in the country. And with every closing, Hamtramck inches a little closer to closing an ugly chapter in its history.

The city quit maintaining the streets and the sewers, and shut off the water to some blocks -- not-so-gently prodding residents in those neighborhoods to pack up and move out so the city could raze their homes in the name of urban renewal.

“They wanted to build a new city hall and commercial area," Friedmann says of the stretch along Joseph Campau, south of Holbrook. "The city hall never happened, and they ended up building a suburban-style strip center, and none of the other development even happened.”
Judge Damon Keith ruled in 1971 that the city had discriminated against residents in those neighborhoods. He ordered restitution, but the city didn’t have the money or the will to deliver. So the case dragged on. And on.
Then, around 1999 the city decided to get serious about resolving the suit. Officials started figuring out where they could find pots of money, and got to work getting plaintiffs into homes.
There have been several phases of restitution as the city cobbled together state and federal programs. For this latest, and Friedmann says, final round, the homes are mostly new construction built to fit in with Hamtramck’s existing housing stock.

"They all have high-efficiency furnaces or geothermal heat, wide open floor plans, center islands in the kitchen, all granite counter tops.”
Plaintiffs who get houses in this phase will get special loans through the state. The homeowners will pay taxes, insurance and utilities. But they won't have a house note. And if they stay in their homes for 15 years, they’ll own them free and clear.
That’s great news to Tisha Friday. She and her daughter will move into their home here in the coming days. They’ll each have their own bedroom upstairs. And there’s a third bedroom. It will be a nursery for Friday’s granddaughter, due to be born in mid-March.
“She’ll eventually have something to call her own," she said. "A lot of times we can’t, you know, come up with our own.”
Friday’s grandmother didn’t live long enough to see her granddaughter become a homeowner. And that’s the bittersweet part for a lot of those finally getting homes. They’re the children and grandchildren of the people the city displaced.
Friday is part of the plaintiffs class in what some say is the longest-running housing discrimination lawsuit in the country. And with every closing, Hamtramck inches a little closer to closing an ugly chapter in its history.

The branches of Friday’s family tree stretch all across this city – with aunts, uncles and cousins still living here. And her family’s roots are deep. Her great-great grandfather shows up in the city’s 1910 Census records, having moved north from Alabama.
But for a family with such history here, the city certainly sent a message they weren’t wanted. Friday’s grandmother, Jean Vaughn, lived in the Denton-Miller neighborhood, one of three heavily African-American areas the city essentially abandoned in the 1960s.
The city quit maintaining the streets and the sewers, and shut off the water to some blocks -- not-so-gently prodding residents in those neighborhoods to pack up and move out so the city could raze their homes in the name of urban renewal.
