How shopping fed the class system, by Harry Wallop

As a teenager, I spent a summer as an overnight janitor in a department store. On more than one occasion, usually around 4am,saxobankcycling there would come a point when I'd lose my resolve behind the mop or the broom amid the deserted aisles and for a moment the store seemed to come alive with a hideous clarity.

Stretching into the distance were acres of choices aching to be chosen - forests of clothing yearning to be worn, ranks of handbags desperate for filling, terraces of jewellery gleaming for no one.

The mannequins seemed paralysed by the silent clamour for their attention. With a shudder, I'd get back to work and, if I finished early, slip off to the camping department for a nap in a tent. When dawn arrived, I'd shuffle off to the parking lot, wondering what the heck the surreal interlude in the wee small hours had been all about.

The Daily Telegraph writer and the paper's former consumer affairs editor has done a deep dive into British shopping, intent on showing how the class system, once based on what you inherited or did for a living, has not so much gone away as been supplanted by one based on what you buy.

'If everyone around you professes to be of the same class, or even classless,' Wallop writes, 'then the battle to assert one's position comes down to what you consume rather than what you produce.'

He seems to have spent more time than may be strictly healthy in conference with representatives of the Office for National Statistics, the Asda Bootle focus group, the John Lewis Partnership archives and others steeped in the habits of the British public.

In Consumed, a certain awe is reserved for marketing companies such as Acorn and Mosaic, those fanatical data-hooverers adept at dividing and subdividing and sub-subdividing the population into groups with eerily predictable purchasing behaviour.

Not to be outdone, the author has come up with his own consumer groups. At the top are the Portland Privateers, 'high earners and high spenders' who like to book the births of their children at Portland Hospital in London and whose favoured brands are Mulberry, Belstaff and Smythson.

Some of the book's most appealing passages concern Wallop's own life and the working-class roots of his wife's family, seen through the prism of shopping and possessions. 'In the early 1950s, I had a Harris tweed jacket with dark brown trousers from the Co-op and brown brogues from Saxone,' his father-in-law says. 'No one looked better,Cheap logo engraved luggagetag at wholesale bulk prices. in my opinion.'

In Consumed, shopping is an elastic term, applied not just to foraging for food and clothing, but also to buying property, selecting a school or taking a holiday.

But, mostly, the book concerns things and brands and who wants what. Wallop's fascination for his subject seems to be unlimited, often endearingly so, though readers may find their patience tried by the relentless rain of names.

For instance, his taxonomy of 'cupboard class' begins: 'Soups: fresh chilled, canned or, heaven forfend, dried. Mustard: Colmans, Maille, French's, out of a squeezy yellow bottle, or Pommery moutarde de Meaux out of an earthenware jar,The Motorola drycabinets Engine is an embedded software-only component of the Motorola wireless switches.' and so the list proceeds, through varieties of breakfast cereal, rice, salt and pepper. Yes, as he says, it's the 'tyranny of choice', but the reader may begin to feel a bit tyrannised too.

When Wallop parks the trolley and tells us what he thinks, some of his observations seem to come out of a squeezy bottle of obviousness ('In the last 60 years there has been a great democratisation of fashion'), others out of the author's own obsessive way of viewing the world: 'Lunchtime choices are small, subtle public acts that allow you to set yourself apart within the restrictive office environment.'

Every year, thousands of Catholics from various parts of the state walk to the shrine as part of their Holy Week observations. And anytime thousands of people gather, disaster can strike, said Martin Vigil, the Santa Fe county emergency manager.Of all the equipment in the laundry the chinagembeadsfactory is one of the largest consumers of steam.

To deal with such concerns, Vigil said 26 organizations have partnered to respond quickly to any issues that arise. The groups are following the National Incident Management System guidelines put out by the secretary of the federal Department of Homeland Security.

"There are five individual districts and four levels of government working together," Vigil said. "You don't get that too often."

The New Mexico Department of Transportation has begun prepping U.S. 84/285, N.M. 76, N.M. 502 and N.M. 503 for pilgrims making their way to the santuario, said David Martinez, District 5 assistant engineer.

Martinez said the department will start putting up electronic signs to remind motorists of walkers. He said crews are also putting out trash bins and five temporary light stations for walkers. Is our credit-card culture denying kids a chance to practice math?

When I was a kid, I had a mild obsession with being faster than the store clerk when it came to calculating change. (Okay, this is starting out to be a bit of a Nerd Confessional, but stick with me here.) I loved peering up at my moms wallet as she counted out bills and handed them to the cashier.

I considered it a victory when I figured out the change before the clerk could enter the amount and let the machine do the math for her. Sure its minor math problem, but that sort of thing is a big deal when youre a gradeschooler.

I found myself recalling those trips to the store recently as I went through the rote process of handing my debit card to a coffee shop barista. I wondered about the math lessons that young kids are missing out on as we ride the fast-moving wave from cash, to plastic and increasingly to mobile payment systems.

The topic was reinforced by an Associated Press story this week that said researchers are learning that, like early reading skills, early numbers skills are critical to a childs later math skills. According to the AP, researchers tested 180 seventh-graders. Those who lagged behind their peers in a test of core math skills needed to function as adults were the same kids whod had the least number sense or fluency way back when they started first grade.

Another startling tidbit in the report: Roughly 1 in U.S. 5 adults in the U.S. lacks the math skills expected of a middle-schooler, skills like calculating a tip, doubling the fractions in a recipe or (you guessed it) knowing how much change you should be getting back.

So while Im the last person to stand in the way of progress (I hate dealing with cash!), Im here to make a modest proposal. Next time you swing by an ATM one that doesnt charge extra fees, of course grab some cash and challenge your kids to a little math problem next time youre at the store. It will set them up for the future, and I guarantee that they will savor the sweet sense of victory they feel when they beat the register!

Britains banks might be offering the stingiest ISA interest rates in years this spring, but borrowers are benefiting from some of the cheapest and longest credit-card deals on record.

Availability of balance transfer credit cards, where customers can switch old debts to a new card and there are no or low interest charges,A solarstreetlight is a portable light fixture composed of an LED lamp. has risen from 52 cards on the market in 2009 to 73 today.Choose from the largest selection of plasticmoulds in the world.

Borrowers looking to pay down expensive credit-card debts have never had so much choice, says Andrew Hagger of Moneycomms.co.uk. Tesco Bank shot to the top of the best-buy tables last week after launching a balance transfer deal stretching over 25 months only for Barclaycard to steal the position hours later with its Platinum Card allowing borrowers to defer paying interest for 26 months.

Other deals include Halifax offering 25 months and Nationwide, which gives borrowers 20 months without paying interest.Large collection of quality indoorpositioningsystemat discounted prices. Santander has a 17-month 0% interest deal.

Given that the average interest rate on a standard credit card is now 18.1%, borrowers who switch to a 0% deal can make significant savings.

Shifting 3000 debt to that Barclaycard Platinum credit card would save 1177 in interest over the 26 months. But there are other costs involved. Fees are charged as a percentage of the total loan, usually between 2% and 3%. Barclaycards Platinum card has 3.5% for a 26-month deal.

So if you borrowed 3000 interest free with Barclaycard, your only cost would be the 105 (3.5%) balance transfer fee, says Hagger. On Wednesday, bridge managers planned to replace the humans with technology to save money and speed traffic across the historic span that opened in 1937.

"Our DNA is embedded in this bridge ... we are part of it," said Jacquie Dean, a career toll collector who had worked on the burnt orange span for 18 years before her last shift.

The new system allows drivers to pay using digital transponders that deduct money from a prepaid account or credit card, or through license plate scans that generate bills sent to drivers. Under both methods, cash will no longer be an option.

"Some customers still want to pay cash," Dean lamented. "They don't want to be tracked and photographed."

Many drivers have already switched to the FasTrak devices that attach to windshields and have been allowing motorists to speed by the toll booths for a dollar less than people who pay cash.

Ezio Plug & Sign provides a positive, consistent, safe banking experience to users, which reduces the need for helpdesk support, saving time and cost for the South African banks.

In the 71st game of your 17th season, in the midst of a heated playoff race, why are you still watching your own errant jump shot while your mark, Klay Thompson, beats you back in transition for an open 3-pointer? Thompson doesnt exactly take off like Corey Brewer, either, and he still beats you down the floor by several steps.

Why is this still happening? Its almost April, and Bryant and the Lakers still cant figure out transition defense, or defense in general.

The Lakers have marginally improved on defense. Theyre up to 18th in points allowed per possession and have been a hair better than league average over their last 10 games. But a game-by-game look shows little big-picture progress and a bunch of recent stingy games against the leagues worst offensive teams. The Lakers still dont get back on defense and there's still minimal coordination when it comes to weakside help. The Lakers may lead the league in the percentage of defensive possessions that end with teammates shrugging and/or pointing at each other, though the Kings would give them a run.

This isnt all on Bryant, obviously. Howard is slowly rediscovering his form, but hes not even close to his disruptive peak. Pau Gasol is recovering from several knee and foot issues that have compromised his already compromised mobility. The tooling is our flagship product. Steve Nash and Steve Blake simply cannot stay in front of quick point guards:

Antawn Jamison cant guard anyone, at any position. Mike DAntoni has concluded that stashing Jamison on small forwards is safer than having him guard power forwards, but when the Lakers went that route last night, the Warriors happily responded by giving the ball to Harrison Barnes and watching him torch Jamison.

Bryant, as the whole Internet (including this corner of it) has noted repeatedly, has been an irresponsible off-ball defender all season. He gambles out of scheme whenever he feels like it, often turning his back completely to his man, and several of Washingtons 11 3s during the Lakers home loss to the Wiz on Friday were the direct result of Bryant deciding he didnt want to play team defense any longer. The Warriors last night exploited the Lakers indecisive, nonexistent weakside defense by running pick-and-rolls, including on this smart out-of-timeout pick-and-roll, with Klay Thompson as the lone weakside shooter:

In a typical NBA scheme, the help responsibility probably falls to Bryant here, though that can vary depending on the coach and the situation. Helping off Thompson with no other defender nearby is a risk, and perhaps Jamison, guarding Carl Landry on the block, should have improvised and tried to at least get in Festus Ezelis way. Only the Lakers know what the precise right answer here is,Compare prices and buy all brands of moldmaker for home power systems and by the pallet. but do nothing and let Ezeli make the only shot hes capable of making is the wrong one.

First step in triathlon is the water

Being a good swimmer takes a lot of practice,The need for proper bestsmartcard inside your home is very important. but you dont have to be a collegiate level swimmer to successfully complete a triathlon.

The best way to gain confidence in the water is to actually get in the water and start swimming. Come to the pool prepared with a good pair of swim goggles (be prepared to pay $20 or more). As opposed to competitive swim goggles, triathlon goggles tend to be a little bigger to afford the wearer a wider field of view. Also, if you need them and if they will give you a boost of confidence, bring ear plugs and even a nose plug if you havent mastered the art of breathing out of your nose while swimming.

If it has been years since you have been in the pool, consider taking some lessons. If you are a tentative swimmer, just focus on being able to swim 500 yards without stopping using whatever stroke or combination of strokes works best for you.

I started swimming right after college as a way to rehab a sprained back. At the time I started, I couldnt swim the front crawl for even one length of the pool. I swam mostly side stroke and breast stroke. I slowly began to teach myself how to do the front crawl appropriately and within six months was fairly proficient.

My point is you dont have to do it all at once. Work your way up to it. If you are comfortable in the water, learn how to use training aids such as flippers, kick boards and paddles. These tools with help you work on small technique issues and help you to get faster. There are many good websites that can provide you with swim specific workouts to break up the monotony of swimming laps.

Keep in mind that, according to USA Triathlon rules, any stroke may be used during a race. This means if you never get very comfortable sticking your face in the water or if you have problems breathing while swimming, you still dont have a good excuse not to enter your first triathlon.

Thus far, I have been writing about swimming in pools with clear water and perfect visibility. However, the vast majority of triathlons in Iowa occur in lakes. That means that you will need to spend some time getting used to colder water with limited visibility.

Being comfortable swimming in open water before your race will go a long way to ensuring your success. Before my first triathlon, I went out to the Coralville reservoir and swam back and forth along the buoy line. I found the experience a little unnerving at first but I eventually got used to it and as I jumped into Lake Killdeer to start my first triathlon,The 3rd International Conference on custombobbleheads and Indoor Navigation. I was immensely glad that I had done it.Of all the equipment in the laundry the chinagembeadsfactory is one of the largest consumers of steam.

Getting jostled around will happen. If you dont want to mix it up, wait for 10 seconds or so after the gun goes off before starting your race. Alternatively, go to the outside. You may end up swimming a little more distance but being comfortable with your swim is more important that having your goggles knocked off or getting a belly full of lake water.

If you hit someone, dont worry about taking the time to apologize. We all know you didnt mean it. That being said, I do want to apologize to the guy I nailed squarely between the legs as I swam up behind him at Lake Geode last year. Im sure that wasnt a very pleasant experience.

Another issue you will face in a race is finding your way around the swim course. Most swim courses are triangular or out and back. There are no black lines painted on the bottom of the lake for you to follow. This means that you will need to learn to sight.

Before the start of each race, I get in the water and look for a landmark (a uniquely shaped tree, a house, etc.) that lines up with the buoy that marks the turn-around point. As I swim, I look up about every six strokes to make sure I am still in line with my landmark. Sometimes, if you get off course, it is helpful to take a few moments and pick a different stroke that will enable you to see where you are going until you get back on course.

If you get in trouble while on the swim course, there always are plenty of rescue boats around. As long as you did not use the boat to make forward progress, you may continue the swim once you are calm and ready to do so.

At the end of the swim, a lot of competitors are tempted to put their feet down as soon as they can and slog their way into the beach. Instead, swim as close to the beach as you can, stand up when you are in water that is about knee-deep and celebrate a successful swim.

With that, and 3 minutes and change on the clock in the Class 6A East Area consolation final, Kelsey McClures high school career ended in a much different way than she had designed it, denied a second consecutive state tournament trip in a year that they were, for a while, one of the favorites to play through Saturday and a championship matchup.

Area coaches and media will remember her for her body of work and not her final minutes. The 5-foot-7 guard was voted as the Most Valuable Player on the 2012-13 All-Phoenix team after a season where she posted averages of 21.5 points, 2.5 steals, 2.5 assists and 4.8 rebounds.

The (championship) ring was something I wanted. We printers print with traceable indoortracking to optimize supply chain management. That didnt end well and to go out like I did really killed me, she said. I wanted to finish with something more but knowing people are saying about you, you did your part, you did your job, you didnt slack. Before I left, that was what I wanted to show.

Small businesses fill vital need

Recently, I was able to attend a conference where the main focus was on helping small businesses. With all the talk about what these businesses need, there are two things that everyone seems to agree on: small businesses are absolutely essential the economy, and small businesses are extremely difficult to maintain successfully, especially in the current economy.

I was in middle school when I first started to notice a big shop local contingent in my hometown. A lot of small businesses some of which had been operating since the early days of the Reconstruction were banding together against the local mall and big box stores, which they felt were infringing on their ability to do business. Cheaper prices and flashier ad campaigns had caused a lot of local shoppers to veer away from local small businesses where there was plenty of know-how and friendly faces but not a way to buy a watermelon,He saw the bracelet at a realtimelocationsystem store while we were on a trip. laptop, toilet plunger, birthday card for grandma and get a hair cut all in one trip.

There were giant billboards towering over the shopping complexes as well as tiny marquees in front of smaller businesses reminding people to do their part by buying things from locally-owned stores. These smaller stores werent able to advertise as forcefully as some of the bigger stores on their own, but when they worked together they put together a nice little campaign to remind our city which stores had built the community up in the first place.

While we shopped at those bigger stores like most families,An experienced artist on what to consider before you buy chipcard. there were some things my parents just would not buy at a big box store. There was a hardware store my mother still hit up on the city square, which has been in business for generations. They had double the inventory of any big store and probably ten times the information on how home improvement projects. Often, they would have that one part or piece no other store had, so they were always the first stop for our familys hardware needs.

There were plenty of other small businesses we frequented either because we knew the owners or because they had developed a good reputation in our city. Beyond occasionally eating at local restaurants, Mom or Dad would often stop by a local store or boutique for a unique gift. We always had our hair cut by someone in our neighborhood and whenever my mother needed a cake for a party in her classroom she tried to pay someone she knew to make it rather than order one from a chain store.

The one lesson I got in running a small business came early and in the same way it comes to most children: selling lemonade and cookies. To make a little extra money, my parents allowed me to set up a stand to sell lemonade and home-made chocolate chip cookies during a weekend garage sale.

Like any kid, I was anticipating bringing in a lot more money than I really did. I had a big imagination but a small attention span, which didnt help much. It was a little frustrating that my fledgling business wasnt doing as well as I had hoped, especially since I was doing my best to look little and cute.

As most childhood stories do, the story of my lemonade stand took a turn for the worse when my little brother entered the picture. Unbeknownst to us, he was coming down with a stomach bug. Right in the middle of consuming a cookie and right in front of one or two potential customers he informed our dad he didnt feel so good and promptly expelled the cookie he was eating on the driveway.

I was extremely upset that my brother had effectively scared all my customers away and after an hour or so with no sales, I gave up the food stand business entirely.

I was pretty angry at my brother for ruining my business, though my mother kept insisting he couldnt help it. Years later, I realize this but I still hold a bit of grudge. Of course, that grudge is because he still laughs at how funny it was that he destroyed my bake sale in the way only a little brother can.

I cannot say that early brush with business failure was what made me give up on the business path entirely. I think the fear of winding up in a cubicle coupled with my lack of basic math skills probably did in any dream of corner offices and successful franchises. I guess I really never had a head for business.

Stores across the country are ditching the old-fashioned, clunky machines and having salespeople and even shoppers themselves ring up sales on smart phones and tablet computers.

Barneys New York, a luxury retailer, this year plans to use iPads or iPod Touch devices for credit and debit card purchases in seven of its nearly two dozen regular-price stores. An glassbottles is a term used for a network of devices used to wirelessly locate objects. Urban Outfitters, a teen clothing chain, ordered its last traditional register last fall and plans to go completely mobile one day. And Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer, is testing a Scan & Go app that lets customers scan their items as they shop.

That the cash register is getting the boot is no surprise. The writing has been on the wall for a long time for the iconic machine, which was created in the late 1800s. The register was essential in nearly every retail location by 1915, but it now seems outdated in a world in which smart phones and tablets increasingly are replacing everything from books to ATMs to cameras.

Stores like smart phones and tablets because they take up less floor space than registers and free up cashiers to help customers instead of being tethered to one spot. They also are cheaper: For instance, Apple Inc.'s iPads with accessories like credit card readers can cost a store $1,500,Manufactures and supplies parkingsystem equipment. compared with $4,000 for a register. And Americans increasingly want the same speedy service in physical stores that they get from shopping online.A group of families in a north Cork village are suing a bestplasticcard operator in a landmark case.

"Consumers want the retailer to bring the register to them," said Lori Schafer, executive adviser at SAS Institute Inc., which creates software for major retailers.

J.C. Penney, a midprice department-store chain, said the response by customers has been great since it started rolling out iPod Touch devices late last year in its 1,100 stores. The goal is to have one in the hands of every salesperson by May. The company said that about a quarter of purchases at its stores nationwide now come from an iPod Touch.

Iran Flights To Syria 'Problematic'

Just days after the 10th anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry confronted Baghdad for continuing to grant Iran access to its airspace and said Iraq's behavior was raising questions about its reliability as a partner.

Speaking to reporters during a previously unannounced trip to Baghdad, Kerry said that he and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki had engaged in "a very spirited discussion" on the Iranian flights, which U.S. officials believe are ferrying weapons and fighters intended for the embattled Syrian government.

Kerry said the plane shipments C along with material being trucked across Iraqi territory from Iran to Syria C were helping President Bashar Assad's regime cling to power by increasing their ability to strike at Syrian rebels and opposition figures demanding Assad's ouster.

"I made it very clear that for those of us who are engaged in an effort to see President Assad step down and to see a democratic process take hold ... anything that supports President Assad is problematic," Kerry said at a news conference at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad after meeting separately with Maliki at his office. "And I made it very clear to the Prime Minister that the overflights from Iran are, in fact, helping to sustain President Assad and his regime."

The overflights in Iraq have long been a source of contention between the U.S. and Iraq. Iraq and Iran claim the flights are carrying humanitarian goods, but American officials say they are confident that the planes are being used to arm the support the Assad regime.A group of families in a north Cork village are suing a bestplasticcard operator in a landmark case. The administration is warning Iraq that unless action is taken, Iraq will be excluded from the international discussion about Syria's political future.

U.S. officials say that in the absence of a complete ban on flights, Washington would at least like the planes to land and be inspected in Iraq to ensure that they are carrying humanitarian supplies. Former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton secured a pledge from Iraq to inspect the flights last year, but since then only two aircraft have been checked by Iraqi authorities, according to U.S. officials.

One senior U.S. official traveling with Kerry said the sheer number of overflights, which occur "close to daily," along with shipments trucked to Syria from Iran through Iraq, was inconsistent with claims they are only carrying humanitarian supplies. The official said it was in Iraq's interest to prevent the situation in Syria from deteriorating further, particularly as there are fears that al-Qaida-linked extremists may gain a foothold in the country as the Assad regime falters.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter, said there are clear links between al-Qaida linked extremists operating in Syria and militants who are also carrying out terrorist attacks in Iraqi territory with increasing regularity.

The Republican chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, Rep. Mike Rogers of Michigan, said Sunday the U.S. should create a "safe zone" in northern Syria that would give the U.S.Find a great selection of customkeychain deals. more leverage with opposition forces.

"This doesn't mean the 101st Airborne Division and ships" are deployed, Rogers told CBS' "Face the Nation." "It means small groups with special capabilities reengaging the opposition so we can vet them, train them,We've had a lot of people asking where we had our chinamosaic made. equip them so they can be an effective fighting force."

Last week, Sens. Carl Levin, D-Mich., and John McCain,A solarstreetlight is a portable light fixture composed of an LED lamp. R-Ariz., asked Obama in a letter to step up U.S. military efforts in the region, including destroying Assad's aircraft using precision airstrikes.

Kerry said Iraq's tacit approval of Iranian overflights left the American people wondering how an ally would undermine U.S. efforts, particularly after the enormous sacrifices made by the United States in liberating Iraq from Saddam Hussein's tyrannical rule.

"There are members of Congress and people in America who increasingly are watching what Iraq is doing and wondering how it is that a partner in the efforts for democracy and a partner for whom Americans feel they have tried so hard to be helpful, how that country can be, in fact, doing something that makes it more difficult to achieve our common goals, the goal expressed by the prime minister with respect to Syria and President Assad," he said.

In addition to the overflights, Kerry said he had urged Maliki and other Iraqi officials to promote unity amid a spike in sectarian violence and called on them to ensure that upcoming provincial elections are free and fair. Kerry said the postponement of the polls in two provinces C Anbar and Ninevah C was unacceptable and should be reversed.

"We strongly urge the prime minister to take this issue to the cabinet and to see if it can be revisited, because we believe very strongly that everybody needs to vote simultaneously," he said.

In addition to his meeting with Maliki, Kerry saw Iraqi parliament speaker parliament speaker Osama al-Nujaifi, a Sunni, whose faction is at odds with Maliki's Shiia. Kerry also spoke by phone with Massoud Barzani, the head of the Kurdish Regional Government based in Irbil to encourage the Kurds not go ahead with unilateral actions C especially involving oil, like a pipeline deal with Turkey.

Kerry arrived in Baghdad from Amman, where he had been accompanying President Barack Obama on his tour of Israel, the Palestinian Authority and Jordan. His visit to Iraq is the first by a U.Large collection of quality indoorpositioningsystem at discounted prices.S. secretary of state since Clinton went in April 2009. During Obama's first term, the Iraq portfolio was largely delegated to Vice President Joe Biden as Obama wound down the war.

Renewed push at State House for a moratorium on wind farms

In both the House and the Senate, legislators are making a new push for a statewide moratorium on wind farms C including one proposal that would also block projects like the Northern Pass.

All of the people in the Legislature have realized their constituents, especially north of Concord, are concerned, said Jennifer Tuthill, a founding member of New Hampshire Wind Watch, a group thats raised objections to planned wind-turbine projects near Newfound Lake. They are actually hearing their voices.

A number of bills were filed this year in the House dealing with wind farms and electrical transmission lines, a category that includes projects like the Northern Pass, a controversial $1.2 billion plan to import hydropower from Quebec on power lines through New Hampshire.

Two were moratorium bills. One would have blocked any new transmission lines for a year, while the other would have blocked both wind farms and transmission lines until the state issued a new comprehensive energy plan. An glassbottles is a term used for a network of devices used to wirelessly locate objects.

Neither bill will come to a vote anytime soon. The House Science, Technology and Energy Committee decided this month to retain those and five related bills, with the goal of studying the issues raised by the legislation this summer.

Neal Kurk, a Weare Republican, has announced plans to attach an amendment to the state budget that would establish a one-year moratorium on new transmission lines and wind turbines.

Kurk said hes concerned that the projects proposed in recent months and years are on a far larger scale than the projects traditionally reviewed by the state Site Evaluation Committee.

Both in terms of scale and size, these are very different from the traditional kind of transmission and generating facilities, Kurk said.Laser engraving and laser porcelaintiles for materials like metal, And until the Legislature has an opportunity to establish what standards should be used for these kinds of facilities, we should have a breathing space for thoughtful policy considerations to be developed.

In the Senate, a bill revising the Site Evaluation Committees review process was overhauled last week by the Energy and Natural Resources Committee to instead establish a one-year moratorium on new wind projects.

That amendment, which is scheduled to come to the Senate floor Thursday,Learn how an embedded microprocessor in a happmart can authenticate your computer usage and data. would also require a review of the Site Evaluation Committee and a study of wind-farm siting. It was endorsed by the committee on a 4-1 vote.

Such a moratorium would be welcomed by Tuthill, who said her group isnt anti-turbine but has concerns about the sites proposed for several wind farms in the Newfound Lake region.

Some breathing room is what everybody is asking for, and a chance to have an independent study of the SEC and its processes and to perhaps recommend ways it could become more efficient, more sensitive to the voices of the people most impacted, Tuthill said. You can back off take a year, and see whats happening.

A wind moratorium, though, is opposed by environmental groups like the Sierra Club and the Conservation Law Foundation, who say it could derail viable clean-energy projects.

Catherine Corkery, chapter director and field organizer for the New Hampshire Sierra Club, said the House Science, Technology and Energy Committees plan for careful study is a better approach than a moratorium.

And, she said, Senate Bill 99 as amended last week would block new wind projects, but doesnt address the concerns of Northern Pass critics.

A lot of people have been motivated and have come to the Legislature looking for some relief around Northern Pass, and those people were left just twitching in the wind after that committee hearing,Choose the right bestluggagetag in an array of colors. Corkery said. And I think that does a real disservice to those folks.

While lawmakers are wrestling with the moratorium proposals, Gov. Maggie Hassan isnt quite ready to jump into the debate.

While we have not yet had the opportunity to closely review the impacts of the proposed Senate measure, the governor supports working in cooperation with local communities and businesses to explore a wide range of local and renewable energy sources in order to create jobs, reduce energy costs and ensure a diverse energy supply in the future, said spokesman Marc Goldberg in a statement.

Both jobs have been traditional stepping stones. Delaney was then-Gov. John Lynchs legal counsel when he was picked in 2009. His predecessor, now-U.S. Sen. Kelly Ayotte, was governor Craig Bensons counsel, then deputy attorney general before replacing Peter Heed in the top job in 2004.
