$1 million in incentives helps keep 3 companies in Commerce City

Nearly $1 million in local, county and state incentives for three expanding companies will net this city 150 new jobs and more than $30 million in capital improvements.

The city, in fact, provided the biggest carrot, rebating $494,000 in building-permit and other fees and taxes to Cummins Rocky Mountain, UE Compression and Precast Concepts.

Cummins Rocky Mountain and UE Compression had flirted with moving to Phoenix, Oklahoma City or Houston, but decided to stay after being shown it would be worth their while.

Commerce City's 2-year-old incentive program has helped 30 firms create 668 jobs and more than $85 million in capital investments.

The announcement was disrupted by a group of protestors angry about hydraulic fracturing in the city. The oil-and-gas extraction technique is being studied by city officials for its effects on local groundwater supplies.

"We're here because our city is welcoming these companies and putting profit before the welfare of families," said Beth Borta, one of the Commerce City Unite protesters.

Adams County Commissioner Alice Nichol said the protesters were off base. "We're here in Adams County trying to jump-start jobs. What they are protesting is a separate issue."

Cummins designs, builds, sells and services diesel engines and power-generation equipment and is expanding its campus on East 104th Avenue. At least 73 new jobs will be created .

In addition to the new company jobs, Commerce City spokeswoman Michelle Halstead estimated another 200 construction workers will be hired for the expansion.

Precast Concepts recently acquired Ohio-based Shawnee Mold and moved it to Commerce City to bolster its own StoneBilt Concepts product line. The company makes decorative concrete paving slabs, architectural precast products, and plastic molds for precast concrete garden and architectural products.

UE Compression is building a new 100,000-square-foot building on East 96th Avenue to house custom gas compression system manufacturing and business operations. UE is using Commerce City companies for the construction, and the new facility will add 65 new jobs paying above-average wages.
