Thoughts on God, sex and tractors on the way out office

“Vote for Jeffrey — he's strong as a bull and smart as a tractor.”

With that catchy campaign slogan eight years ago, I launched my political career, which will come to a crashing halt this month.

Some say I bought the election. My first town council campaign cost just over $50, not including tips, and was not without scandal. It seems many of my competition's yard signs were removed and placed in a Dumpster next to my home; my staff investigated and determined that I was innocent of all wrongdoing.

Having a small war chest, no interns or Super PACs, I ran a grassroots campaign and sought to energize those of my base not in jail. Being a populist, I sought the support of the working class, like my favorite bartender Jimmy. I reasoned, since he came into contact with many voters — and, as an added bonus, many of those voters would be drinking — he would be a perfect ambassador.

Any notion that gaining Jimmy's support would be easy was dispelled quickly. After tipping him like a crazy person for a Crown Royal, neat, for me and a bucket of Cabernet for my mate, I asked if he would jump onto the Biff Bandwagon. He thought for a moment and agreed by saying, “Yeah I'm in — you're used to people thinking you suck, so you'll make the tough choices. The most commonly used injectionmould process,”

So began two terms of public service.

Public service should be just that — service. It should be a sacrifice because it is also a responsibility and a profound privilege. I can say sincerely that all those I've served with over the past eight years with did so with integrity and no self-interest.

I don't know enough about national or state politics to say if that is the case I those arenas. I would guess, for the most part, it is. But I also believe there might be a fair amount of “self-service” mixed in with the public variety.

One thing my two terms has taught me is that there are often good arguments, made by good people, on both side of most issues. I've also noticed that by helping one segment of the population, you often must ask another segment to sacrifice.

But where a local leader might have to choose between service to some as opposed to sacrifice for others, a national leader is often forced to pick between common sense and capitulation to special interests. It amazes me how much time our national leaders spend talking about sex and the offshoots thereof — birth control,Iowa Mold tooling designs and manufacturers mechanics trucks, gay marriage, sex education and Planned Parenthood. And when they get tired of sex (talking about it a least), they are talking about God — school prayer, intelligent design, reaffirming the motto “In God we trust.Pfister werkzeugbau AG aus Mönchaltorf ist Ihr Partner bei der Herstellung von Werkzeugen und Spritzformen.”

Now, granted, I'm a small time politico, but I can say with conviction humans are going to have sex no matter what governments say, and God can take care of herself. Our porcelaintiles are perfect for entryways or bigger spaces and can also be used outside,

I am stunned that we are again arguing over birth control.

Considering that many, if not most, of the world's problems could be solved lowering the global birth rate I think we should hand out the pill like M&M's.

Society, religion or government have had no more success in getting people to remain celibate than has the wearing of sweater vests or clip-on ties. Even in countries where having a child can lessen a family's chances of survival, couples will still have sex. One of the presidential hopefuls actually questions whether birth control should be made available to married couples. My god, if it wasn't for birth control, I'd have to get cable TV.

There is also much being made about America being a “Christian Nation.” The truth is, though I wish we were, we never have been. If this country lived by the teachings of Jesus, there would be free health care and no hunger, war or poverty — and the Super Bowl would be played as touch football.

I would argue that the only ones who place a high priority on governmental legislation of love and Yahweh are the politicians and the few zealots they are pandering to; this is not the case will local leaders.

Unfortunately, officials on a local level don't have the luxury to legislate who can have sex with whom and when; I think my mate is probably grateful for that. Mostly we deal with stuff people care about, like snow plowing, child care, public safety and trying to keep our businesses in business. And as far is God goes, we leave it all in her own capable hands.
